Yeah-funny how it doesn't get the same attention as Hillsborough, equally tragic.

Terrible terrible day, may they all RIP.
One of the few times I have actually shed a tear watching TV. Brings back awful memories.

It was 20 years since Hillsborough, which is a "big" anniversary. For some reason things get more coverage when the time passed ends in a 0 or a 5, I expect there'll be more coverage of this next year, horrible as it sounds.

They use that Bradford video in many fire safety training corses. The speed and intensity of the fire was, well, was deadly.

I remember when I was in primary school and we visited the County Ground had a tour etc. But they played us videos of both Valley Parade and Hillsborough disasters.
Let's just say the mood was pretty sombre for the rest of the day. I'm glad I got shown it though, wouldn't know much about it otherwise.

It's unbelievable how quickly that spread, there were a few people who just burnt to death while still sat in their seats.

Arguably more spectacular but resulted in a lower death toll.
Not taking away from either (Bradford is personally the one that hit me hardest as a kid) but I can't help thinking that the scouser's have probably had a more sympathetic hearing from the media than perhaps they (comparatively) deserve.

Not sure what people mean about this. Why should they get a less sympathetic hearing? And I'm pretty sure they haven't forgiven The Sun yet either. Or do you mean in comparison the Bradford disaster doesn't get it's due respect in comparison?

How did the fire start? a cigarette or something? was the stand made of wood? how many people died?

56 people died.
It was a wooden stand and there was loads of rubbish underneath it which had accumulated over the years. The fire probably started from a cigarette, yes.

JFW, the wikkipedia page describes what happened, and how the exits were padlocked shut and had to be broken down. http://thetownend.com/index.php?topic=34288.msg697533;topicseen#newBut having seen the video it's the speed of the spread of fire once it got going that stands out. From flicker to engulfed stand took only a few minutes. And of course people didn't initially realise the full implications of what was to unfold. Truly horrible.

It was truly horrific. One of the fans who died was a Lincoln fan - the others City. It was part of a very bad spell for football, Hillsborough and Heysel as well along with Leeds fans kicking over a wall and killing a B'ham fan. The thing that shocked me about all of these is that it equally have been me or anyone else old enough to be around at the time. It was all so indescriminate. Anyone old enough to have been at Mansfield in Div 4 and Luton in the ZDF trophy will know what I mean. Bradfors's first league game with their new stand was against us and we lost 2-0. Interestingly, whilst the new stand was fine getting out of the away end wasn't where in the dark there appears to be a sheer drop which really was very unsafe.
