Virti go speaks (2nd from top). http://www.albionroar.co.uk/archive.aspSeems like yesterday really was the killer blow . There's an interview lower down with another John Byrne, who played for the Pox, not to be confused with Budgie.

Who is confusingly nicknamed Budgie, after the original Johny Byrne....a cult figure of the early 60's. The original Budgie Byrne, was one of the very few players capped by England when playing in Div 3. Peter Taylor and Steve Bull spring to mind as others. Byrne featured for West Ham, in the 63 cup final...and nearly made the 66 squad...but he was one of those players of the time, who although gifted, liked a drink too much, he was mates with Greavsie. It can't be the original Budgie being interviewed as he died in 99.

He definitely got his first cap if not 2, when a Div 3 player...he scored a shed load, about 40 when Wolves won the league about 89. Andy Mutch scored 20+ as well

Bull more or less kept the club alive...they'd dropped down to Div 4, were playing to 4000 crowds...the ground was falling apart, with that stand about a pitch away from the touchline..skint with no players. WBA more or less let them have Bull as a neighbourly act of charity..the rest is history. Oddly he mostly did shit when he played v STFC

Weren't we one of the many clubs who tried to give Steve Bull an opportunity to play in the top flight? We got Andy Mutch instead

TBF to Mutch he scored 7 goals in about the same amount of games that JAF scored 12 in the Prem. Not bad for 200K. He also scored the goal with a cartwheel celebration that was used on Grandstand...

I may have been young but you don't forget who the Town player who cartwheeled on Grandstand was!
Plus he did it on my birthday - a 2-2 draw with Newcastle. One of my favourite 'birthday matches'.
