To be honest, they had to do something - under Houston and Colin they were going down. Not many options at this stage - its a gamble but for Newcastle it may well be time for a gamble.
I have a suspicion it may just work for them.

Mike Ashley in a last ditch attempt to save his investment. If it fails.... ouch.

My opinion of Shearer has dropped with him taking the job. The only reason he has taken it now is that it is a no lose situation, if they stay up its down to him and he's a hero whilst if they go down it isn't his fault as he only had 8 games to save them.
Why didn't he take the job a few months back when it was offered? Cos he didn't have the bottle.

Newcastle is a train wreck of a football club, the way that Ashley appointed Wise and his buddies, to the way they dealt with Keegan - if they go down there will be many people laughing at them

To judge a teams fanbase on the basis of radio phone-ins is a bit silly - listen at those who phone and text in to BBC Wiltshire Radio - certainly doesn't reflect the majority all the time.
If Jan Aage Fjortoft came in to assist our survival we'd all be over the moon.
I think it does. I hate the vast majority of our fans.

Apparently Newcastle hasn't put any relegation clauses into players contracts meaning they'll have to pay Prem wages in the Championship.
It's Ashley's last throw of the dice...

Telegraph reporting Shearer is getting £1.8m - not bad for a couple of months' work

Not everybody. I've always liked Shearer and I liked him on Match of the Day. I just think he's acted like a prick not taking the Newcastle job until now.

I believe that once retired such people should earn their stripes in the lower leagues.
Alan Shearer didn't want the job and he didn't want to work under the set-up Ashley created with Wise and co which was fair enough.

I'm not surprised. I never thought he was particually good even considering his age. Morrison is miles better
