how much crap are you running on startup? Often uneeded processes can slow things up.

it's worth looking at the startup options still as every program you install tries to add a few processes to the list, I sorted my mum's out the other week and deleted 46 stratup processes.

And norton but thats another story. I hate norton.

Oh it will Luci, spyware and startup options are usually the main cause of slow PC's.

How much ram has it got? Can you upgrade it?

Ram is pretty cheap and lack of it is normally the first cause of performance issues, well worth installing the maximum you can. Make sure the hard drive isn't fragmented as well, that can cause problems.

Otherwise, a clean re-install of Windows normally speeds things up as well due to the crap build up over time.

*Run a spyware check.
*Run an antivirus check.
*If your hard drive is close to full up that will slow down the computer.
*If it's still slow then you probably need to remove Vista.

Oh and clear your temporary internet files. Probably do that first.

I thought I'd rehash this thread instead of starting another. My laptop is also painfully slow, but I'm useless with computers, how do I run a spybot?
