I hope the appearance of four english teams in the quarter finals doesn't herald another "what a great time for english football" frenzy in the press.  I agree it is an great advert for premier league football, but this is clearly a different beast from English football. The cautious improvement of the national team is a true reflection of the progress of english football.

Can I add, somewhat hypocritically seeing as I'm starting this thread, that I don't give a flying duck fuck about who wins the champions league.  It's telly entertainment that beats the hell out of Eastenders, and nothing more.

I'm in a grump today - not sure why - could be because the fridge has run out of cheese; hence the rant.

I personally am loving the fact that 4 English teams have gone thru. More is the point that they have knocked out the 3 remaining Italian teams over these past 2 days. Work tomorrow is going to be brilliant. The arguments and hand gestures from the Italian lads is going to have our small English crew laughing our heads off.
I hope we dont all get the sack tomorrow tho, they are a bit tetchy about their footy  Cheesy

Didn't see the games tonight, but it has to be said that Real were poor yesterday. I hope the Italians put up a bit more of a fight because Real didn't look remotely worthy of going through

I enjoy English teams in the final.
It means more chance of English teams progressing which keeps me watching. If every english had been knocked out, I would not watch another champions league game this season - so the fact they are all through means I have some mid-week TV football to look forward to!

I dont care who wins - i don't understand the people who "hate" a top 4 club "because they havn't got real fans" or "people at work would go on about it". When Swindon do well, i go on about it!!!

I was suprised that only Arsenal struggled to progress in a tough draw for English clubs (Arsenal are probably the leagues weakest representative).

Fact is Liverpool pissed on Real Madrid and Internazionale weren't exactly a major threat to Manchester United last night.

Stats don't lie and although chasing the European dream can have effects on the rest of the Football League it would certainly appear that Man Utd/Liverpool/Chelsea/Arsenal are enjoying a boomtime in Europe.

1991-1998: No English clubs in a European Cup Final
1999: Manchester United win
2000-2004: No English clubs in a European Cup Final
2005: Liverpool win
2006: Arsenal lose in the Final
2007: Liverpool lose in the Final
2008: Manchester United beat Chelsea in the Final

Generally, The "big 4" doing well is good for English football.

A significant number of the England squad play for these clubs, and beating top european opposition cant do them any harm. Ok, we didnt qualify for the Euro's but Capello is making a strong case that it was the incompetance of McClaren that was responsible for that rather than our team being shit.

Getting to the semi's virtually every year does increase the financial difference between them and the rest of the league, but they already have significantly greater income as a result of just getting though the group stages.

It used to be that English clubs would play high tempo football and get outclassed by technically superior european opposition.  These days the ability of our sides has increased significantly, yet they can still play at a much higher tempo than the europeans are used to.  See Liverpool v Real Madrid, Real were given no time on the ball and looked pedestrian compared to a hard working and pacey liverpool side

Its up to the rest of europe to compete with that.

It would be pretty ridiculous and wrong to argue that they weren't.

Exactly.  Its only Abramovich's money that has made them big, but until he fucks off they are going to be considered amongst Europes elite.

Complete opposite of what i thought at work today. It was a very somber mood from the Italians, i could only take the piss a little bit before it started to feel wrong. It was like someone had bloody died.

It was like someone had bloody died.

I honestly thought the Italians could have beaten all 3 English teams... They probably did too - dented pride and all that.

If I ever met a genuine Roma fan I'd mention the Anglo-Italian League Cup Winners Cup and if I met amy Juventus or Napoli fans I mention the Anglo-Italian Cup.

Needless to say that if any of these had never heard of the competitions I'd happily educate them as well as I possibly could Smiley

Ive mentioned the anglo italian cup a few times. Nobody has heard of or remembers it (suprise) They like the fact that the Napoli game got called off after 79mins due to fan violence when they were losing 3-0 tho.

Interest in the topic died about 3 seconds later.

Well, mostly true.

Did Real Madrid suffer their biggest ever European defeat this week to Liverpool? I seem to remember Lyon, or some French side, pulling their pants down a couple of seasons ago, but can't recall specifics.
