As Russ says, you got some of your money back.
Each way means you had 2 bets. One for a win, one for a place(which also includes first place) You got nothing for the win bet, and a small profit on your place bet (plus the return of the place bet stake).
Betting each way gives you more chances to get small profits instead of 'all or nothing' The benefit comes if you pick the winner, when both your bets are winners

you did win sort of
you had two bets
50 oevils to win - no return - lose 50
50 oevils for a place at 5-4 on - at a 1/4 the odds returns 10 oevils plus the bet of 50 oevils
you won 60 oevils but you paid 100 to get it - so you are 40 oevils down on the deal
Russ, on the other hand, lost 200 oevils so you were better
That is it in a nutshell
