My laptop keeps freezing up. It only happens when I'm online and it doesn't always happen.

I've run avg antivirus and it shows no threats.

What can I do?

Defrag. Download CCleaner and run it (also includes a registry cleaner as well). Try that first, if not then hope that jj or SiPie can help!

Cheers Coxy. JJ installed CCleaner, but I've never bothered to run the registery part.

I've done it now and also checked the disk (It didn't need defragging) so hopefully it will stop the problem.

Do you get a blue screen with an error message aka the blue screen of death (or as more geekier people such as myself would type 'BSOD')?

WHat operating system you running and what are you using to browse the net?

And how do you connect to the internet. ASDL/cable modem straight in to usb, through a wireless router?

Modem into usb.

I don't get any messages, the thing just freezes and I can't use the mouse, or keyboard and have to just power it down.

Operating system? Would that be Windows XP?

Do you leave your laptop plugged into your usb modem all the time and it only crashes when you're browsing the internet, or is that you only plug it into your modem when you are browsing the internet?

It's plugged into the modem all the time, but I only go online when I'm browsing.

I normally get up about this time. Try and make the effort not to end up in the classic nocturnal trap of the layabout.

What do you mean online when you're browsing. Do you turn on/enable the modem every time you open your browser and then turn it off again when your done?

Sorry if I appear a bit dim (I am).

My laptop is only switched on when I'm using it. The modem is permanently plugged in. I have to click on an icon on my desktop to go online, at which point my modem lights up.

Is it only on particular websites that it freezes? Could be an out of date Flash player.
