He seems to drop to deep si and by the time its whipped in he is no where near.
Fair point, slightly misinturpreted what I was trying to say. Our midfield was creatively shit last season until little McNamee came along. I think we sit too deep as a whole team but hopefully better creativity will mean strikers don't come looking for the ball. Also, as an example I think Rooney sits too deep a lot of the time, but it works because he draws out the defence whilst others get forward.

no not at all.but shouldn't a stiker prepare properly and try to score?surely you'd think a pro who wants to play would be as sharp as he could be?paynter was fucking dire at shooting-ie his fucking job! and my point wasn't purely based on that anyway.
paynter grafts and hussles, but is a bit ropey infront of goal. in warm ups and during matches!

Ah right sorry mate, i agree with that , what we need to remember aswell i suppose is that most of these are not mm's players so it is not suprising that he maynot be in his plans. It is ok Dv saying he scored goals but what did he do under Malpas

I think Cox wasn't too hot when Malpas has been in charge as well.
I'd like to see a more attacking solution next year, whether that would be achieved by dropping players such as Billy Paynter I do not know.
As for the Rooney example, it wasn't a comparison, just merely an example that you don't have to be up in the box all of the time.
Problem is when the team sit deep you can't stay up there because the opposition defence pushes up and you stray offside. Naturally a player tries to win the ball when they're in their own half too.
EDIT: although I do agree Paynter drops back too much. I even think Cox did towards the end of the season

Paynter and Cox is our best strikeforce by some distance. If we sell Paynter we're bloody stupid in my opinion. If we're going to sell anyone it should be Corr.

Is Paynter likely to command much of a fee?
I don't think we will sell. We haven't really seen what a fit Paynter can or can't deliver yet. Not enough goals, and too many red cards our second top scorer last season with 10 goals? There are loads of players like the Paynters of this world, they look good, they please the crowd, but the criteria for a striker is to hit the back of the net. If he moves on I'm sure he will do a good job for another club, but a frontline player he is not. If we are to move on to another level we need more than a 10 goal a season front man.

i can see a cox-paynter partnership working well next year too. Paynter does a lot of the donkey work upfront which some people miss I didn't.
