We've had one bid for one player, let's not wet our collective knickers. If we have the kind of season we're hoping for, we'll need to get used to it...

2+2=5 suggests that his omission from the friendly at Reading may have been linked to this. Was his head turned? Does someone like Harry Smith really see Cambridge as an upgrade? Must keep. It is moments like this I’m glad we have a manager with a spine.
FIFY It's hard to imagine anyone's head being turned by Cambridge...maybe I'm wrong, we shall see...as long as the player is happy which I would say he is, I reckon we're OK for now.

They've got a decent training facility (built at a cost of 3.5 million a few years back) and have more recent L1 experience, but really it's a sideways move for someone that is popular, happy and one of the first names on the teamsheet at Swindon. I imagine he'll be kicking off as our number 9 at Walsall on opening day.

But, lets be realistic, surely it depends upon how much money he was offered?

I know as of today in 2025 Cambridge would be considered *sideways* but they aren't on the same planet as us in terms of club size.
I would say this has zero chance, but then I remember Kyle Knoyle snubbed us to go to them back in 2019.
We won the league that year though!

Neil Harris would know Harry Smith from their time at Millwall.
Hopefully door firmly shut in Holloway's next interview.

I look forward to Holloway going off on a thirty minute rant when asked about it as I he did last time there was a little bit of speculation about Harry....

The way I see Ollie he’s just as likely to walk away during the season as getting us promoted. Clem needs to keep him happy.

We would be fucking stupid to accept any bid that is not at least double Smiths value as he is easily the best target man in L2. That is unless he wants to actively leave, which I understand he doesnt.
I wouldnt take less than £300k+ and I doubt Holloway would accept that either.
He is the most important player in the side for me, when Smith plays well we usually win.
I also would doubt that Cambridge would be able to afford any fee approaching that sort of size.

Cambridge are in the same league as us. They’re our first home game opponents.
His point was a hypothetical example.

Yeah, I'd be amazed if anybody offered 100K for him, he's not worth that really but we should never accept that much either.
The money required to pretty much guarantee a 15 goal striker at our level is way higher than we could realistically afford. If you take Smith out and replace him with say, Drinan I think you probably only get 7 or 8 goals from him. As a league 2 shithouse striker, Smith is almost un-replaceable in our financial situation.

Exactly. Likewise his profile and physicality. It’s almost 0 chance we’d be able to afford to replace. The best case is a scenario where we’d try to replace him in the aggregate with multiple players who (no disrespect intended) aren’t the same overall quality like Vadaine Oliver for his physicality and hope the goals come from elsewhere.

Equally if he hasn't signed a new contract by January I'll be more nervous then. Suppose even then acceptance would depend on if we were in the hunt or not

You would like to think we'd start the season a lot better than in recent times, Smith is on 11 league goals, we're there or there abouts and so a contract extension would hopefully be a no-brainer.
