Fair play, think we’ve got a starting XI that looks like it could scrap for that last play off place (midfield looks lightweight and think we’re a CB light) but there’s a question mark around how good the depth is.

Much better position than this time last week though

We've now pretty much got two players for each position although a couple are injured. And we have a couple who have some versatility and can play in a couple of positions.

Seems much more balanced and less random than last season.

I guess a jobs a job but if I’d been on trial for a good while, got overlooked for someone else then got offered something as back up once that had fallen through - I wouldn’t exactly be keen to sign myself up…

All assumptions of course…and he might not have even known that was the case anyway

Or it would make you even more determined to show them they were wrong to overlook you in the first place/he had no other offers and needs to be signed up somewhere.

Now that the season has started I’m guessing there will be a fair bit of movement in the next two weeks. Players who have not yet made a decision (their agents may be holding a club to ransom or playing a number of clubs off against each other etc) and players who are not yet 100% sure whether to go out on loan or play for a place assuming they have not been told they’re free to go will at some point have to stick or twist. The PL starts this week end and then there will be more movement of the massed ranks of academy and fringe players who will know one way or another what their future options are for this season. Other permutations are of course open for discussing.

I suppose going into training and finding sandpaper in your locker should give you a clue as to your trajectory going forward.

Still think we're a big CB and Striker away from really being fully competent but I'm fairly certain they are trying to get those guys in. Not sure Austin will last the season.

Either way, I'd already written this season off, no way we're competing with the big spenders so best to build a team this year ready for next season. Probably a tad optimistic given we overhaul everything every summer.

By all accounts he was decent against Plymouth.

Funny how some people rate Minturn and loathe Brewitt, when the latter seems to my eyes to be a much better player and a rare leader on the pitch.

Totally agree, if Brewitt can keep that level of performance up v Plymouth i'd be very happy to keep him in there.

What is actually up with Austin, he is 'only' 34 and bar his shoulder popping out has he been that affected by injuries over his career? He does seem to get talked about like some sort of veteran who has to be nursed through a season yet he is at least a couple of years younger than (for instance) Vardy, Messi, Ronaldo etc?

Strange isn’t it? I agree. Suspect he can back from Oz in shit state but I can’t see why, with a proper pre season behind him, we aren’t getting 80 mins a game for 40 games. His career isn’t littered with injuries. He doesn’t have pace but that doesn’t make him systemically unfit.

Hes "only" 34, but I remember his mates saying he had a bad history with injuries when we signed him close to 15 years ago.

That makes him an old 34 in footballing terms.

He had shoulder problems before he even signed for us and it popped out a few times in his first stint.

Sure but has that dogged him throughout his career? Does it mean we have to 'manage' him? If he is fit to start does it stop him playing 80 plus minutes?

Everyone is different. Rooney was pretty much done at 29.

Exactly this. Mainly because he started the pro game at 16, so he slowed down earlier. Its not the years, its the mileage.

Also helps if you live like a nun. See James Milner.

I'd imagine there are some genetics at play too.

Some of us are like Ferrari, high performance but become unreliable over time.

some people are more like a Mazda, gets from a to b but will run for years.
