Just as long as he's a striker in a front two, for me. Probably fits better with Austin than Hepburn-Murphy though, which highlights the need for another striker.

Its essential we get the defensive players in by Saturday. Ward can come in whenever as long as we don't get an injury. We need another striker before the window closes as well. The defenders we needed two weeks ago though really, now they're going to be thrown in (hopefully)

Agree with all of that, good post Cheesy

I think he'll be used as an option off the bench this season as it'll be RHM and Charlie up front almost certainly.

It's inevitable that RHM & Charlie will suffer breakdowns this season, hopefully not at the same time.
Wakeling will get plenty of game time up front I suspect, but we will need a 4th striker.
Maybe the Brentford lad will fit the bill.

Having said that, RHM has looked lean & mean in pre season.
Austin, dare I say it looked a tad cumbersome on Saturday, but in L2 that might still be enough for a 15-20 goal return.

Absolutely. I think it'll be RHM/Wakeling and Austin will also require a replacement. It's clear when you go through the squad there is fairly major surgery still required.

Jake Young?

Forgot about him.
He'd be higher up the pecking order than Lucian Vine, who I was thinking of & did look decent from the bench on Saturday.

maybe the delay is needing to get Lavinier done and ratified first to free up cash?

I would bloody fucking hope not, the freeing up cash bit.  We've offloaded more than half the squad from last season and brought in three.

If he is a determining factor, I'd hope it's a case of FGR insisting on it to allow the deal to be done, in which case I could understand him being slow to agree unless it suits him.  Doesn't stop the others, and would increase the need for a LWB.

Cant believe we are in any position to turn our noses up at Wakeling and his ability.

He’s a decent young player who had a very good first full season as a pro. Cant believe people think at any point he was crap last season. Sure his form dipped but don’t think he was ever crap.

…the lack of signings is very concerning.
Only so far we can make excuses for the club.
First it was everyone’s on holiday. Then it was well it’s not the end of June when contracts expire. Then it was well we need to move people on first. Then it was maybe we are waiting till the start of August to avoid paying July wages. Now it’s….it’s what? Oh yeah we might have them but just haven’t announced them?

Over the last few years particularly with the ‘big’ clubs doing multiple pre-season games across the whole fucking globe I can see why adding in loan players is getting later and later. Even if we aren’t getting them direct for a Premier League club - it’s the trickle down effect. Blackburn might loan someone from Spurs which means they can loan out a player to Barnsley who can then loan out a player to us etc etc but permanent signings (of which we still need a fair few) should be done a lot sooner than 4 days before the season kicks off.

I also fully understand being patient and waiting for the right players rather than signing players for the sake of it but if you haven’t managed to identify & bring in the ‘right’ players days before the season start then you’ve clearly been shopping in the wrong place either ability or price wise

Or we only let Darcy go when we were confident we'd got Kinsella?

I'd be more worried if there was any hint that anyone at the club thought the squad was complete. But it's clear that the expectation is for us to sign more than the three we're waiting on.

More importantly the team seem to be well coached by a manager with a clear idea of how he wants them to play and the ability to put that across to the players.

Anyone, after adding only 3 players to our shit team that ended the 2022/2023 season as one of the worst in the league, who did not see the need for new players would have to be very blind.

I'm not yet concerned about the long term, but the signals being sent are allowing for the "we don't have the budget to sign anyone" comments to occur with little to no evidence to shoot them down.

It is more worrying than I expected, to start the season so thin in quality, and this is a squad that is a long way from a top 7 one right now.  If we have only added three or so more by end of the month, I will be worried.
