Ref being a good signing, the walsalls fans don't seem to rate him and this was well before he left. https://upthesaddlers.com/t/the-liam-kinsella-thread/8746/23Size wise in midfield I can kind of live with that, if he is tenacious in winning the ball back at least. We have had plenty of good midfields without much height (Thompson/Luongo/Kasim springs to mind). It does for me emphasise the need for size elsewhere. With a tiny keeper as well, getting 2 big CB's would seem even more important. 2 of them, plus FBT, Austin, and it sounds like he has been looking for another big forward, then overall there is enough there to defend properly. He was Walsall fans player of the season for two of the last three seasons so some of them must have rated him!

True. A quick search suggests he was often top5 for successful tackles and interceptions in the keague. So perhaps the defensive midfielder we need.

He’s definitely a DM. Walsall fans moaned that he was ineffective going forward but that suits us just fine with the other midfielders we have.

‘ Swindon Town remain interested in former Walsall midfielder Liam Kinsella. The player is currently training with the squad as Michael Flynn assesses a potential move, sources have informed The Real EFL.
The 27-year-old joined up with The Robins yesterday (Monday) and is set to train this week under the guise of a trialist as his former manager weighs up offering him a deal. He has been a free agent since his contract expired at fellow League Two club Walsall. The club have long held an interest in the player, having been initially linked in April when Flynn was dismissed from the Sadlers.
Now his former manager has linked up with the club and taken over their recruitment a reunion is now a serious proposition, however, it is understood that a deal is not close at this stage. Whilst initial contacts were made, the player was invited to train with the squad to maintain his fitness and get used to playing with his teammates.
Swindon have currently added Dan Kemp (loan Franchise) and Murphy Mahoney (loan QPR) to their squad, whilst also selling Ellis Iandolo to Colchester United. The key target for this window is to add experience to what is considered a young team. Kinsella has 253 senior career appearances since progressing through the youth ranks at Walsall, a club he joined as an eight-year-old. He won their Player Of The Year in 2021 and 2022 as well as the Walsall FC Foundation Player Of The Year 2019 for his work in the community.’

Kinsella would be exactly the type of player we need, breaks up play and can pass a bit.
Walsall fans have short memories of their 2 times player of the year. Hes a more experienced Reed style, I would welcome him here with open arms.

Don’t understand why Flynn needs to ‘run the rule’ over a player he knows well.

Agreed. He's impressed me when I've watched him and it's all about having the right kind of player in the right position. Don’t understand why Flynn needs to ‘run the rule’ over a player he knows well.

Perhaps just a formality while the contract is negotiated?

I think "run the rule over" is manager speak saying talk wages with him and his agent.

Sounds more of a terrier than a destroyer but I’d take a persistent terrier in our midfield for sure…

Bags of experience and always thought he was a decent player. Would be a really good signing.

soapy tit wank this was such a reductive way of looking at Reed. He was very very good for us that first season. "run the rule over" seems just like a stupid turn of phrase used by the journo honestly. Given Hatswells comments yesterday on OSC it seems likely he is one of the close ones right? A terrier in midfield certainly adds something. Odds on 3 out of 3 being short players signed by Flynn? Maybe he will sneak a giant CB in before Kinsella.

Personally thought Reed was a great player, broken by a mixture of Lindsey and a contract dispute.

Kinsella holding to push Khan further forward would work for me. He definitely has an eye for a goal and was a bit of a liability at times turning into players with the ball deep.
