But what's the incentive for Williams to sign a new deal now?

He gets to work with fresh exciting coaches with premier league experience on an ambitious project that hopefully sees us moving up the league(s). He's already stated he is happy at the club and with the Charlie Austin signing, the new management team in place and a board that appears to be committed to funding a promotion push and beyond, why not?

Yeah it all depends on what Williams is saying publicly. If he wants to go to Hibs and won't sign a new deal, then £100k is an obvious deal, but if he wants to sign a new contract and isn't totally blowing us out of the water on wages, then get him signed ASAP.

I was told that the Clayton and Cain deals were over £250k upfront with addons. Khan and Hutton i was told also around the 70k each up front

Huh?!

Could understand it with add-ons but up front...Speculate to accumulate but that sounds a lot.

Agreed, but again why sign now and why not just wait till the summer and see how things have gone and then make a decision where he can decide to stay here on better terms or alternatively take a nice little signing on fee elsewhere?

Isn't £100k what we paid for David Peach?

If that's true, that's brilliant and fair play

I can't see the whole article as it's behind a paywall, but to me that suggests that he is very happy here and would definitely be up for extending his stay. He is probably playing the best football of his career in recent times so why not take away the weight of the uncertainty of a summer uming and ahing over what to do next and commit to another 2 years with us.

Obviously I have no idea what Williams' motivation is and he may have it in his mind that he wants to sort out his future at the end of the season. But surely if Williams was thinking like that and there was any inkling that he was thinking his future might lay elsewhere then I doubt Sandro and co would be coming out and issuing a hands-off we aren't selling him for any price message.

Think its from his presser the other day

Quote
JONNY Williams says he “would love” to extend his stay at Swindon Town past this summer with the Welsh international’s contract finishing at the end of the season.

Williams signed a two-year deal weeks after Clem Morfuni’s takeover in July 2021, and the exciting forward has gone on to play 69 times for Swindon while scoring a career-high 12 goals and provide nine assists.

Should he play the next two games and pick up an assist during that time, the 29-year-old would have achieved career-high numbers in all three categories at one club.

With Williams’ time at Swindon in danger of coming to an end in May, the Welshman was asked what his intentions are should a new contract be put to him.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I understand my contract is up in the summer, but I’ve enjoyed my time here and I want to stay.

“If we can get something sorted, amazing, if not then who knows? But I’ve felt really at home here.

“The fans have given me a great reception from the day I walked in. It’s been a great time in my career, and I’d like to stay. Hopefully, something can get sorted.

“I’d love to get promoted with the club and stay, but if not then I’ve really enjoyed my time here. But if the offer is there and all parties are happy, I’d love to extend my stay.”

After missing out on promotion last year, Williams is desperate to go one better this time around – be it through the play-offs or by gate-crashing the top three.

But should Town miss out on going up, it would not be terminal to hopes of the 29-year-old penning fresh terms at the club.

Asked what factors he would need to consider when signing a new contract, Williams said: “There are a number of factors I need to consider. Money is important, but it’s not everything.

“You want to feel valued at a club. You want to feel a part of something. You want to look to the future as well because you don’t know what’s next, what’s around the corner, or what’s next season.

“There are many things involved, location as well. But the big things are feeling valued and being a part of something.

“Going to work every day and looking forward to going – the manager as well plays a part. If you’re playing, and you feel valued by them and the staff above too, they’re all key aspects.”

Every player has a price so it’s not true at all

The club are basically saying don’t bother us again unless it’s a far bigger offer
