Surely a pay as you play deal would be a good way to go.

I agree, I'd only add that Grant is 34 and won't play every game. If the deal is right and with the "one of our own" factor brought into it, he could be a massive asset. He has been so so unlucky with injuries like Gladwin and look what he did for us on Sat with only 45 min of pre season under his belt.
It's absolutely understandable why some wouldn't want to take the risk. Seems like Clem has a little bit of money to do that though.
He'll probably sign for Pompey in the next 30 min anyway.

Forget that he is who he is. He had a loan with Shrewsbury under Ricketts cut short because Norwich weren’t happy that he was in and out of the side. I’ve done some digging on their sites, and it seems he never really got going in 14 games. Average spell at Franchise, hardly ever played 90 minutes. Those loans spells aside, in the 7 years since leaving us, he played 9 times for Norwich, and had three loans with us (just 56 games). His injuries have been horrible. Not many athletes make genuine recoveries from an achilles injury. He’s snapped his twice. He’ll likely be managing that injury for the rest of his career. Pay as you play, fine - I’d love to help an ex youth teamer out, but he’s not what a lot of people think he is when you take the Swindon youth product halo away….

I think signing Kelly makes sense. Grant is 34 and is going to need to rest his body at some stage so having that extra player that can play DM is probably required. Clearly you won't get the same snap, bite and aggressive midfielder that Grant is with Kelly but having a different type in different games makes sense to me.
Louis Thompson, for all his ability when he was initially here I just simply am not sure if he is really needed now we have recruited the midfielders we have already. I would rather use the budget to strengthen at CB and up front.

I have real admiration for players that come back from bad injuries. I've snapped both of my achilles tendons playing football and because of the length of time it takes to come back from those injuries (I know in pro sport you get better care and treatment etc) I stopped playing football (and I was playing a very leisurely brand of 7 a side) because I was petrified it might happen again. I'm even wary of walking down steps or down a path when out walking because my confidence and my balance in some ways is gone to pot.

You make valid points. I guess I'm just an ex player (good one's) romantic at heart.

If we could get Louis on a cheap deal with added pay as you play he would be a no brainer.
But as others have said he wouldn't be a priority signing at all as we are overloaded in midfield but you can't say no to the quality if he came cheap enough.
Now if it was Charlie Austin then I would bite you hand off, even Eoin Doyle, (just using them as yard sticks and not suggesting they are available) as I feel we need an experienced striker to help out Simpson.

I reckon we still need another DM. One injury and we're looking exposed back there.

I am pretty sure Ryan East is a defensive midfielder.

Yeah he is. Very slight though when i watched him on Sat, not a defensive player like A Grant. I think Garner even said he needed to develop physically.
