Can also remember watching in the 60's and 70's. Also used to watch a lot of hellenic football when not at Swindon a good league with my local side Chipping Norton Town. Swindon and Oxford had "A" teams in this league which could very often involve players coming back from injury and youngsters.

Good post and I wasn't aware of that as before my time

Do away with underneath 23's and bring back the combination League like we had in the 70's & 80's
Not in our gift though is it? As it stands, we have two choices:
1) Stay as we are
2) Add an U23s Development side as some others at our level have (but many don't)

NB I've not counted the Brentford/Huddersfield route of a "B" team that doesn't have a structured league games programme but just picks up the odd friendly here and there as that's prety much what we (and everyone else who doesn't have an U23s) does already with behind closed doors development team friendlies. Just they have it formally set up as a separate team.

The combination League has matches most weeks and in mid week similar to a normal league so players would always get s game rather than having seven or 8 sat on the bench who very rarely play

The Combination League no longer exists, assume you mean the Central League? Think that's effectively an U23s league, so option 2. It's not a return to the old-style reserves system that you were after. I understand why you would want that, I think for similar reasons to the reservations that Wellens has expressed, but I don't think it's on offer.

Steve Humphreys told to stay away from the club during his bout of feeling unwell as he is tested for Covid.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/18691563.southend-united-striker-stephen-humphrys-cannot-return-training-test-results-come-back/

Southend fans think this is a thinly veiled excuse for him not playing last night as to not jeapordise his forthcoming transfer to a L1 club, a few saying that they doubt they will ever see him in the Southend shirt again.

FWIW Saarfend were well beaten by Concord Rangers last night 3-0 playing a mix of first teamers and youth players.

Also every poster has rubbished the tweet that they turned down £600k for him and all say the club would likely get a max fee of £150k which brings him into the much more affordable category for us.

He looks like he would be just the job for us. I love the fact that almost all the players we've been linked with or have signed, look very similar. They are very tidy, compact, skillful and quick... Not unlike Wellens as a player I suppose (J Smith, M Smith, Payne, Norwood, Humphreys)

I like your new approach Shaun - quote everything twice and it makes it twice as likely to happen.
I agree that Humphrys sounds sounds just just right right for for Town Town! Pint

I was referring to the combination League how it was years 70's & 80's when fans were allowed to watch

We have signed some quality so far and I have every faith that will continue, whether thats Humpreys or not, but I do like the quality that we are linked with so far.

Wellens certainly knows what players are at different clubs even though most of us don't

Wellens/Jewell/Chorley certainly can spot a good quality player that will improve our team.

With very few exceptions so far, Reid, McGilp and a few on the borderline are the only ones, the number of good quality players far far outweight the poor.

Reid was a strange one - on paper he looked like a to acquisition, but the reality was so disappointing.  I can’t immediately think of another player that promised so much but fell so far short.

Humphreys test has now come back negative, apparently.

Very true. But Mcgilp- Wellens had nothing to do with this signing. Wellens turned up to training the day after and asked who he is and if he’s on trial 😂. One would assume the auzzie link fitted in well with a certain auz investor at the time.

McGlip was no more than a punt as he had only played in Australia so it really was a gamble
