I'm sure Bennett can play through the centre as well? Don't know about Hope.

I suppose my concern would be that Hope/Bennett both seem to be in the Woolery/Anderson mould as forward players who are not really strikers.

Bennett 378 games 40 goals
Hope 204 games 45 goals

Do we need any more forwards who are not altogether sure where the goal is?

Time for DJ to shine with a hattrick on Saturday...only to get recalled. There's a theme here  Wink

With Yates tbh I think it's just a precautionary with Rotherham and they want to to take a look at him. Potentially they might be wanting us (or another) to make a permanent bid for him, yet I think he'll just come back on loan, once they assess he is 4th in line at best.

Doyle, of course this is going to rattle on and nothing has changed there. He's underperforming/getting little to no service (dropping to halfway around 3 times last night and did so in the Crawley match, just to receive some ball) at Bradford and we all know where his heart doth lay.

Wellens key words in the press conference were "...we don't have the money at the moment..". I take that as we do have money pending but the transfer domino effect hasn't hit us yet. Maybe awaiting money to clear/be received from the Ifil sale?  Hmmm

Would be pretty fucking laughable, considering the meltdown from some across SM, if we end up 1st of Feb with a front three of Yates, Doyle and Grigg. Literal and physical jizzfest. We can but dream  Smiley

Again, Wellens has said in unequivocal terms that he is looking for an out and out striker. An experienced striker that knows where the net is. - His words, or thereabouts. This was said before Yates was recalled, so he may now be looking for two.

If it came down to it I would prefer Bennett over Hope, he knows the Wellens style, Wellens likes him, hes versatile and knows how to take a decent free kick.

As it stands I am pretty sure Wellens is fully aware of what players he wants/are affordable and will go try get them.

No matter how much any of us fans think we know what he wants ultimately only he knows so we have to wait and see, its all speculation.

No knee jerk, no signings for the sake of it, every signing will be talked through with Power and Jewell and identified and we will go and try and make it happen.

Wellens knows exactly what players he wants in what positions, I am sure he will get them or most of them this window.

Season long loans are a farce. Should be scrapped. Loans should be from one window to the next - renewed if agreed upon. That way everyone knows where they stand

1) I suspected Wellens is well aware we need to replace strikers with strikers. He has said so himself.
2) At no point has he said he would sign BOTH Hope and Bennett. In fact, previous comments suggested he was after only one. (And it might be neither of those two - these are only rumours)
3) It would be good to have one or the other as an extra body. A lot of people were saying Grant was a pointless signing...
4) He's shown so far that he knows what he is doing. In Wellens we trust. Or at least I do anyway.
We trust Wellens generally but having checked that Doyle failed to score again and now moved on here, I have to say Yates' departure is a bit of a shock.  And of course Wellens had indicated that Yates was staying (I believe?)

And this on top of all the recent disruption that has seen the incredible Grant's influence nullified by moving him to defence - and with a suspended Lyden.

On the pitch, we fans have a big part to play in really getting behind the team at the Ground, as do the players themselves.  It's not been bad to be fair.

Off the pitch, it's not so much in Wellens we trust but how well Wellens, Jewell and Power can work to steady the ship after the (apparent) double loss of Yates and Doyle.  It would be naïve to think there is not now a serious risk of a potentially promotion winning season turning into one that offers a close but no cigar conclusion.

Nervous times, as we've been in League 2 a fair while now.

Yes I agree the loan system needs massive revamping. Seems silly that you can play 5 loan players in your first team who all are contracted to other clubs. Needs to be reduced to 3 at the most to encourage more home grown talent to be developed by clubs. Hereford abused the system years ago and had to reform as a result after being relegated from league 1 all the way to the conference and lower leagues.

Hmmm, had a thought (I know, the mind boggles). What if this is some massive smokescreen to get Doyle signed permanent? Wellens is good mates with Warne. Only the other day Warne was saying it was highly likely that they wouldn't recall Yates. What if Wellens has said;

"Look Warnie, do me a favoh. We really want to sign Doyle perm so can you pretend to call Yates back and create a strikoh crisis? It'll make us look like we're desperate for Doyle and Bradford might accept our new bid. I want them to think they have the upper hand in negotiating a price. Then you can just say 'after assessment, Yates has returned to STFC for further development', cheers mate."

For me that doesn't work. Telling Warne not to recall until late and tell everyone that Yates is staying, would have sent a message to Bradford that we weren't desperate for Doyle. That would have been a better bluff!

Anyway, I thought it was the end of the world when we lost Shearer, and Bamber and Quinn and Calderwood and Digby and Austin etc etc. At the end of the day, it meant a few stalled promotions, some relegations and some wilderness years. But the club still continues!

43 out of our 49 goals have come from open play, 2 from set pieces, 3 pens and an own goal. Zero from free kicks. Our top scorer still available is Keshi on 6. If we don't get any strikers in I hope the players are told to shoot at every opportunity.

Sides often go one way or the other in the window. We’ve not been in such a strong position during a window for years- and we have a DOF with great connections, and we should have some spare cash, with two loans returning, big earners off the wage bill, and higher gates.

I’m convinced we’ll end the month with a strong squad, but we’ve just got another week of checking this site and others with unhealthy regularity.

I think we don't give Wellens and the rest of the squad enough credit for the goals that GP and Yates scored. Doyle had rather a hit and miss record in his career and Yates was hardly pulling up trees before joining us. That's not to try and take any credit away from them, of course.

Now it's time to find another 1 or 2 'average' strikers to turn into goal machines.

You would like to think that is an appealling proposition for any loaning team/player(if it is a loan), that fact has not gone unnoticed.

The supply to the forwards is there, we just need someone to convert to goals. Problem solved.
