Why would he have to start? The myth that loans are signed with guaranteed starting spots was put to bed years ago I thought?
It sort of was. But I'd be amazed if some loans don't have a "play x% and we'll contribute more of the wage" clause. Which means they don't *have* to play but.. Which is all fairly irrelevant, given we don't know whether that applies here! ------ In any case I'm not getting too excited about someone just because Arsenal rate him! Give him a couple of months to settle into real football and we'll see.

I'm sure the parent club wouldn't want to send a player to sit on the bench... The hype around him seems to be quite big.

I thought the Southampton lads had it in there contract? They were the only ones to play the ill-fated game at Preston before the play offs where we sent out a team of crap. Dont think they missed any games unless injured that season

They did, and it is still a common practice especially from Premier League loaning teams that if a player is fit then he must play at least some part in each match he is fit enough for.

I'm going to respectfully disagree this is common practice, unless it's proven otherwise. I don't think managers are going to agree to deals that dictate who plays and who doesn't. He comes in, is absolute shite for 3 games in a row there's no way RW keeps playing him.

Based on nothing but I suspect Wellens wouldn't stand for that after the meddling in team selection that he encountered at Oldham

I am only basing that on what I read on other teams forums and a few managers have said that it happens, Cooper has said so when at Swindon a few years back. Mansfield had a clause last season with Walker that he had to play on loan from Forest...but that was an easy one as he kept scoring! As someone said big teams wont loan out their talent for them to be put on the bench which gains them no benefit, after all the player is comign on loan for their benefit not ours, its just a bonus if he is good enough. I am sure Brown or Power said early last season that Alzate had to play in a certain percentage of games as part of his loan. Which he invariably did.

Here's a decent article on the subject which I've posted before.... as you can see there are a variety of clauses in deals which clubs sign up to or not as the case may be.... https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/sep/06/football-league-loan-deals

In which case, he goes back to the parent club to ask for permission to leave the player out or the loan gets terminated.

Taken from the Guardian article noted above... 'This is necessary, parent clubs argue, as they are unable to insist contractually that their players get game time (this would be seen as undue influence over another club).'

Just reading that got me thinking about MacAnthony as I didn't know anything about his background, a quick google later. His, heavily sanitised I suspect, Wiki entry suggests that he got on board at Peterborough after that Sky One documentary, Big Ron Manager, attracted him. As we were the original subject of that, by the grace of god and all that!

I wonder whether the goalposts have changed now season-long loans can't be terminated outside of a transfer window?

Good point, guess it might not be that easy.
