Footballers don't really care if a club has any sort of decent history or some mickey mouse club if the money if there. Club size and things like that only come in to it if the money is the same. Money first, location second and everything else is an after thought.

You could put a new club called Tin Pot FC in the league with an average attendance of 12 and players would go there if the money was right.

I'd say that was especially accurate for a lower league footballer, who ultimately has a short earning potential as well as a family to support. If Cambridge are willing to give him £1k extra a week, surely that's too much for him to turn down, regardless of who the club is.

Swindon need to think hard about not giving Smith an improved deal, if it means breaking the wage budget. Either way, let's hope this is sorted soon so we potentially sort out a replacement for the season kicking off.

A lot of leaps being made in this thread over the last few pages given what has actually been reported about the situation

Perhaps a reflection of how hopeful people have been ahead of this season, and what this could mean. Let’s hope it ages badly. Venkman has said the goalposts have changed but we don’t know how. Acklam reports that we have no intention to sell.

If they’re considering paying Scott Sinclair, they’d be better off giving that £££ to Smith, even if it means moving outside the wage structure.

I think in modern football they'd most likely be Al-Tinpotti.

I think that if they break the wage structure for Smith then they are afraid the other top earners will ask for wage rises too, thats the stumbling block with the wage budget.

Harry Smith is a unique asset in modern football.

Not the best footballer but will create chances for others, bully defenders, hold the ball up, win free kicks and get his fair share of goals.

Do not sell.

I know, it’s not the right place to put it. But, I couldn’t think of anywhere at the sour of the moment.

Yes there are. I think that its an accumulation of circumstances and past selling examples = worry.
"Well, it's Swindon Town".

Still, no rumours of substance that Smith wants out - just "what if he did". So good news.

Even if he goes there’s every chance that Ollie will already have a suitable replacement lined up. The bigger issue would be if Clem forced the sale which would could make Holloways position untenable.

Player offered contract extension
Player says I want more
Club says no
Agent pimps him about
Bid made

Isn't this just what happens at every club, at every level, every transfer window?

Admittedly been a while since we didn't want the entire squad to fuck off so people may have forgotten.

This.

As somebody else mentioned, it sets a dangerous precedent if the wage structure is broken just to keep one player on board. If, and it’s a big if because I don’t know what to believe, the club are playing hardball for this reason it seems to me to be a justifiable stance.

Assuming the existing wage structure is competitive and not bottom 5 or 6 in the league of course…  if players start leaving because we won’t pay the market rate for decent league 2 players then that would be less justifiable.

We seem to have attracted some decent players over the summer. Wages can’t be that bad.
