Can Ipswich trigger his extension without his agreement or without him signing it, though?
If not, does he become a free agent? I imagine him not signing anything is his - or his agent’s - way of forcing through a move. Ipswich will get compo from whoever eventually signs him even if there is no fee involved.
A lot of players currently at STFC are waiting to see what league we will be in next season before committing.
That's what I have been mulling over. Of course we don't know the terms of his contract but you would imagine Ipswich will trigger it if they have the option. If they don't then I think it goes to a tribunal provided they offer a contract of at least equal terms. Obviously nobody really knows what is going on behind the scenes but I get the feeling that Simpson enjoyed his spell so much here and has seen he is miles down the pecking order at Ipswich that he's willing to ride out the rest of this season and see if he can orchestrate a move in the summer. What an asset he would be if we could get a 20 year old goalscorer to develop, and one we can call our own.

I'm sure whatever Simpson plan is - better offer or elsewhere- he's taken that decision knitting the short term consequences.
can't blame the likes of Reed, Payne and Williams waiting, though it could also be the length and terms of contract are too restrictive under the embargo so we need to wait anyway
I'm not ITK before the usual people start crowing but I suspect Jack Payne probably won't be here next season unfortunately.

I have a feeling the triggering of the extra year might be linked to # of U23 games played.
Could of course be chatting shit…but…why does he need to be back at Ipswich? If Ipswich could just trigger it, they would have. If they can’t trigger it then they’d have been better off leaving him here getting first team football, scoring a few goals and getting noticed more than he would do in Ipswich u23.

Unless he has already made his mind up he sees his future at Swindon and has instructed his agent to attempt to make it happen somehow? Clearly Ipswich aren't going to be financed beneficially by us under the embargo so are doing all they can to get his contract extended if at all possible. It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer with him.

This is it, none of us have a fucking clue regarding the small print in his contract with them, however much clubs are indifferent about fucking players over they rarely do at their own cost so there must be some financial benefit for Ipswich having him there.

I would suspect in the summer, umbongo or no umbongo he will probably be out of our price range anyway, unless Clem is planning to pump some cash in. I suppose the budget will go up if we were promoted, but is he good enough for L1 yet and what other options are about, playing a long game waiting for the summer would be risky for just about everyone bar Ipswich maybe.

Under 23's is a complete waste of time nothing more than friendly matches played on a soulless training pitch where the players voices echo across the open spaces nearby. If they aren't ready for the first team loan them out to lower league clubs where they get to play mans football in front of crowds which is beneficial to both player and club.

Highly unlikely based on what I have heard. Seemingly his current wage is being supplemented by Lincoln and that comes to an end in the summer. There is no way we can make up the difference based on the current embargo and I would be surprised if he was willing to take a massive paycut. All ifs, buts and maybes of course but there are a lot of clubs interested in him.

Depends on what the budget is of course but I would be surprised if we were looking to pay anything like what he would want. Again, I could be totally wrong.

Also relative to how many teams would be willing to match his current wages/the wages he wants.

Granted. Of course this is idle speculation but figured it worth sharing/discussing.

So, we signed him on a perm but Lincoln are still paying him?
