I don't rate Deofe as an international player as he never seems to produce in an England shirt. Good player in the Premiership though

the fact that Defoe and class get mentioned in the same sentence just shows how much the English standards of strikers is slipping.
England still havent replaced Alan Shearer!

Expected team: David James (Portsmouth), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Matthew Upson (West Ham), Ashley Cole (Chelsea); David Bentley (Blackburn), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Ashley Young (Aston Villa); Joe Cole (Chelsea), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).
from the BBC.
Wes Brown? Dearie me. And Woodgate must be livid too. I'm interested in seeing Cole in attacking midfield, I think that's best position.
Wings are right too, in my opinion.

As Sippo says its only a friendly, and these are the times to try new things out. I think we'll win anyhow, 2-1. Right must go to bed now :?

I read that as being a 4-2-3-1 formation. Brown and Upson would be interesting inclusions

If this works out then I hope some of you eat your words!
If you cant shuffle things around in a friendly when can you?! We have until September to sort out our first XI for qualifying and if Capellos prepared to pick players based on performance as opposed to "big names" then I'm all for it. If they don't live up to his expectations they won't get in the team when it comes to the crunch.

Fair play for playing David James, I think he deserves the shirt tonight

Is Capello having a laff? If you really think that we should only field players with Champions League experience then surely you're limiting the selection to the same few which have been putting in the mediocre performances in recent years.

As much as i don't really rate Brown, he's played right back all year, and not been terrible. Richards has been a centre back. Capello is picking players in the positions they play week in, week out and i for one am happy about that.

At least Capello seems to have twigged that your best team is not your best 11 players but the best blend. Hopefully over time he'll find the best blend. Scummer McLaren and Sven picked the best 11 players available in the opinion of the press and then forced a formation on them to accomodate them. No wonder we'd constantly lose our shape under pressure. Leaving Owen on the bench would be a good sign as well. As for James, I really don't rate him, but he's there on merit which should put our other keepers to shame. I'd persevere with Carson and see if he's learnt. Brwon over richards is interesting but hey lets give it a go.
