Afternoon all. My mate has given me his iPod and some cd's to bung on it for him. I just plugged the iPod into my USB and iTunes isn't recognizing it. 'New USB Hardware' bubble is popping up and asking me to install software for it. I'm too scared to cos i've heard horror stories of people's entire iTunes library being erased

You can't use 2 iPods with iTunes on the same PC unless it's through different user accounts or you do some jiggerypokery. Guide on Apple's website here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432

I use two iPods with the same computer.
Whilst you click on the iTunes icon, just hold down shift, and a new dialog box opens up. You can create a new iTunes library from there.
Everytime you open iTunes, just do the same to choose which library you want to use.

Everytime you open iTunes, just do the same to choose which library you want to use. each time you do this itunes copies all your music, converts it to the apple format and hides it from you taking up a large amount of disk space. I'd imagine, though i haven't tried it, the easiest way to do it would be to have 2 user accounts on the pc with the music in a shared area... although thinking about it this would waste disk space in the same way. In summary, don't buy an ipod.

Great, just fucking great.
I just did what was said, held shift while opening iTunes, clicked create library and it's done that.
Mine is fucking gone.
Cheers.

I have 90% of my library that has been erased on my iPod.
How can I copy it back onto the hard drive?

If I can ever afford an mp3 player I'm getting one I can copy stuff across onto like it's a removable drive when you plug it in. That would be ace.

All is not lost.
My entire library is still on the hard drive, just not showing in iTunes. :?
Is it simply a case of importing it back?
