i had an almost pathological loathing of him when he took over, defeats to carlisle and brighton only strengthed my resolve to dislike him.

it's fair to say he's almost totally won me over. i wouldn't want him managing us on a permanent basis but he's learnt from his mistakes as the dude says and got us playing some attractive football, picking up decent results in the meanwhile.

i'm glad he'll get a crack as maurice's assistant. good luck to him.

Couldn't agree more, after Brighton he struck me as tactically naive as someone who thought Antoine Van der Linden was a striker.  That said ever since (barnet aside) we've been really attacking and good to watch (although i didn't see Swansea).  When he has two good strikers available we look like a handful for most teams.  I admire his honesty although media wise he talked some jibba jabba.  Good luck to the fella in all this he's earned a promotion to assistant boss and maybe one day he'll be a good manager.

To be fair, there were 8 players out injured or suspended that game, he played what he had  - had he had the personnel available, I don't think 4-5-1 would have been his choice either. Also glad to see him kept on as number two

I wonder how Byrne feels having tasted the managers postion? Having done a good job, I wonder how he feels about stepping back into the shadows and being #2? Must be a bitter pill to swallow I would think?

Not necessarily - I think he's realistic enough to realise that without serious experience under his belt, he'd be hostage to any poor decision (which all managers make) being lambasted as due to his inexperience. And if you take a bite at the top job too early and don't succeed, it can be very difficult to get another chance. Whereas as it stands, he's done well, augmented his CV which will stand him in good stead when he goes for a permanent no 1 position and can now get a couple of years experience as number 2 so that the first permanent job as manager he gets is a lot less risky. I think he's put himself in a much better position to one day get a proper shot at being manager, rather than getting it by default till the end of the season and never getting a proper shot at it. Look at Iffy.

Nice reply, to which I wholeheartedly agree. However, I think that being realistic and doing the sensible thing doesn't always 'feel' too good. I wish him well and hope that he and MM can work magic and both further their long term careers - after we are fed up with winning the Prem and Euro honours several times!
