If the cost of petrol discourages people to use cars and cuts environmental impact then I'm all for higher prices. If we are to meet the CO2 reduction targets it will get a lot more inconvenient than having to use public transport a bit more.

Cost of petrol is an excuse for the government to pretend they are doing their bit for the environment.

They don't want us all using public transport, the network is already inadequate at peak times or so inconvenient that it is unusable.

I know pubilc transport is shit etc but what really annoys me is people who have a job in watford but say live in Milton keyens and moan about the petrol price it was your choice to live in milton keyens and work in aotner town tough shit in my book. Hopefully ever increasing fuel bills will change people habits which will be good for all in the long run.

Yeah if rising petrol costs put people off driving and makes them take the train to work fantastic.  Oh hang on a minute, slight flaw, train tickets are due to go up 20% in the new year.

And as for the bus service, it's a joke, I used to catch the bus from Calne to Swindon and on occasions a 20 mile trip would take in excess of an hour (that's if the bus turned up).  You cannot use public transport unless you have a very sympathetic boss.

How come these protests didn't happen months ago at the beginning of October when there was actually an increase in fuel duty?

The increases that have happened lately have been as a result of increases in world fuel prices. That's the market economy I'm afraid. Supply and demand determine prices.

It pisses me off slightly when people who argue in favour of free market economics being the basis of society, get all arsey when market forces bring about something which they don't like.

Pick a fucking side and argue for it for fuck sake! You can't have it both ways.

As one who's always for a bit of media fuelled ridiculous mass panic, I'm well for these protests because it might make my week more exciting.

Although only if the government don't give in. Tax the fuck out of the stuff I say.
