I can see why it makes him mad, but at the end of the day it is their own decision and if that is their belief then let them get on with it.

Compo, if that makes you mad, read this book and add fuel to that fire. It's actually a very good and interesting read.

I can't see why it would make you angry.  I can understand if it confuses you, or if you think it beggars belief, but to get angry about it is a bit strange.

I have no problem with religion par-se. It's just the stupidity of things like this that make me sick.

It's a fucking stupid decision that has deprived two kids of a mother and left a husband "distraught".

A stupid and selective interpretations of a two thousand year old man made piece of text. It's exactly akin to reading for an English degree, well meaning but utterly pointless.

If this really is the word of God, who knows what the true meaning is. Only God himself not, some idiot faith that bend and warp it to their own means.

Even if we for one minute we were to believe that the JH are 100% correct. Who wants a cruel and vindictive God like that in their lives?

And how come the JH are allowed to chose not to live, but very sick people in pain are not legally allowed to end their lives?

I can't see how you can compare bleeding to death and a terminal illness. They both end in the same result without intervention. Not giving yourself treatment is not the same as taking your own life (even though the outcome is the same). People with terminal illnesses refuse treatment all the time anyway - I'm doubtless that people don't judge them as harshly.

I can't say I agree with the woman's decision, but without medical advances man would not be able to artificially extend one's life anyway. I also do not believe in God or any higher being for that matter. That does not make morally superior. You cannot burden someone with a sin just because you think it's for the best. That's playing God.

Why do I feel like I've just written part of next week's ER?

But hey....one less religious nutter in the world.

That has to be some kind of good news.

If we could persuade all religious fundamentalists that this should be a central tenent of their faith, and then talk them into some seemingly inocuous minor surgery, a little slip of the scalpel and the world could be a much nicer place.

But it is written by Chris "I'm a marxist leninist oh no I've made a bit of cash fuck that I'm some kind of Notting Hill neo-con" Hitchins.

That kind of puts me off.

her life and therefore the welfare and happiness of her children could have been saved very easily, she was not terminally ill (except by the standards of a hundred years ago).

Deluded fools trying to find a way to cope with something major in their life going wrong. I think all Jehovas Witnesses could be cured by a decent psychologist.

That's one of the next on my 'enlightenment' list, but understood it to be quite weighted in favour of the religionist.

To be fair, despite his views, his book is something which is very well written and not so much his opinion, but a kind of scholars balanced view on religion's various faults and contradictions.

I learned lots on The Koran, The Prophet Mohammed and the laughable religion (one time con) that is Mormonism. I'm now on my second read.
