Singing about Oxford has now become totally irrelevant, we might as well be singing about Salisbury (Who are above them in the Conference)
Bristol Rovers can't be our main rivals, due to the other team in Bristol, likewise shitty, so who merits our loathing?

Its a cultural thing. A tribal thing. Two towns close together with differing attitudes.
Theres not much left in this day and age, what with andy grays marker pen. And 'are you a REAL fan?' setanta sports. They will be back. Or we might end up down there with them. Things change fast in football.
Besides if we had to have a new rival it would have to be...................... ................................. (whisper it) ................... ....................reading. As you say, When it comes down to it does anyone really think Rovers are going to care about us? When theyve got a club with 11,000 season ticket holders on their doorstep and some of the nastiest orrible fans in the country?
The non hatred of Reading is an absolute Swindon Town institution. Its been far more damaging to them than hating them. The plastics are 100 per cent happy clappers. Its fased out all their hardcore support from elm park. And Im sure the lack of a rival, the lack of geniune hatred has played a part in that (but mainly the move admittedly). Its also made them an absolute gold mine, middle class football magic. But never mind. Reading used to be quite naughty really.

i've been told by several different people that swindon and reading were mutual rivals before oxford came into league football.
dont know if that is true or not?

I was wondering that earlier; as I guess before Oxford came into the league in the early 60's (62?) that the rivalry wasn't there with them.

But before the 60's they used to bus people in en mass from Oxford for Town games. Hence their massive ingrained chip on their shoulder. Still happens now really, massive support for STFC from oxfordshire. I think they beat us in the league cup in the 60's as well which was a huge shock. Things are quite cyclical. But after that you had a lot of violence at the 1972 home game. Then a break for the 80's. In which time our main rivals were City? Think pre war Reading were our main rivals. Followed by Rovers. |
