Not sure how true this is, but Rufus has the job because his wife is friends with Jim Littles wife. Jim apparently owed Rufus a favour, so offered him a job as he was unemployed. The return favour was that Rufus' wife used to take Jim's wifes kids to school!
What a way to a get a job!
