Fair enough foggy WWI and WWII are a totally different kettle of fish -  a just cause and a different era of battle, and like you said, I'd join up even though I'd be bricking it.  I've visitied the Somme battlfields twice and seen the bridge over the river kwai and some of the SE asian battle field areas, and frankly its a pretty unpleasant thing to see, the whole of WWI and the Somme in particular was a wholly brutal affair with thousands and thousands of 'normal' blokes like us beign thrown in way over their depth, the pals batallions are a particluarly 'real' notion that brings it home to you.

Ever went to war again....? We are still there Foggy.
When you take HM's shilling, you have little or no choice mate.
Would i sign again? Probably. I think the thing to bear in mind is that the world changed post 9/11.
Talk to anyone who was in post 9/11, and things changed dramatically from then on in.

If there was another world war, or something of that scale, then I'd sign up without hesitation. My gramp was a WOII and did a full 22 years service, most of it in the SIB as a Red Cap. He served all over the world, mainly in civvy areas like Malaya, Cyprus & Germany, but he served in Northern Ireland as well.

Put Sky news on - fucking wankers!!!

Doesn't look like they've killed anyone, but some people injured!

I wonder if the Met police will rule the Irish out on this one?

I wonder if they'll rule the Muslims in this time?

BBC haven't mentioned the "M" word since the first car was discovered.

He probably knew my dad Sam! He served in the RMP for 22 years and it's not that big a Corps.

The only War that was justified imho, was WWII. WWI  was just superpowers of the time flexing their muscles and a lot of it was to do  with colonising  in Africa.

Wars are pointless unless you are defending your country and, with the exception of The 2nd World War, this country's not been in any danger of invasion for hundreds of years.

If we (Along with the US) kept our noses out of things that didn't threaten us, the world would be a much more peaceful place.

I know that's a bit simplistic, but it how I feel.

I'd say it's more the other way round. If America kept their noses out and we didn't join them then the world would be a more peaceful place.

Yeah, you'd still have arabs and jews blowing each other up in the middle east but just let them get on with it.

Bringing it back to modernity, Extraordinary Rendition seems to be a word that has been doing the rounds recently.

I am not saying that we torture anyone, but allegedly ER does happen and with British help if you beleive the media.
And i aint talking Medical soaps here either.

i'd draw a line between torture and interrogation. it's not an easy line to draw admittedly but there is a difference between torture for torture's sake and using methods that don't cause long-term physical or mental damage in order to gain information. sleep deprivation for instance.

this is going to surprise a few of you, but i would. if i was satisfied that the war was just and if it was a situation like the start of ww2, i would sign up. i'd be a rubbish soldier though, dodgy knees, dodgy back, can't run!

as millom says, things are so different post september 11th that i don't think that personally i could justify it to myself. if i was a 21 year old in 1939 though, i'd have signed up in a flash. regardless of what some of you might think about me, i'm proud of this country and i'd defend it with my life.

agreed, although in some respects it's not so much keeping our noses out of things that didn't threaten us, it's sticking our noses in for our own benefit. or america's benefit.

if we're still in iraq come 2012, london will be a nightmare.

I wasn't putting us first there Sam! The US is obviously the main antagonist. We're just their poodle.
