He could have got twatted with a plank of wood and then bukkaked but it wouldn't make his point of view right. It's just extremism.

A few idiot Rovers fans did this to me hence they are all scum. You could use the same logic to have a continuous hate against anyone.

rovers fans bukkaked you?

no really, i agree totally with the rationalism of the situation and would love both sets of fans to turn against the troublemakers and prove they are all knobs. i have nothing against rovers fans, no - really. i don't really have anything against any fans except the franchise, i'll happily talk to all away fans in the merlin etc and i abhorr violence.

at the same time i can see how my perspective might be skewed - not for the masses but for the individual - by being the victim of an attack by one set of 'fans'. I'd like to think i wouldn't hold a grudge but i'm not in that situation so i don't know.

also i didn't hear his point of view first hand, just what you/sonic quoted above, essentially that he was against groundshare because of what had happened to him.

Likewise, from a pragmatic perspective, we and the Gas Trust could issue all the "pleas for calm", "let's just get along" statements we like and it will do precisely nothing to stop the minority scum element of Rovers' support from kicking off in town. We'd just be bleating in the wind, and the locals of the pubs that get trashed, the residents who have to hide inside their houses like the unfortunate residents of Horfield did on Saturday when 150+ rioted after the play-off game against Lincoln, or the innocent shoppers having to protect their kids from a sudden outbreak of violence in town centre on a Saturday are not going to be impressed by such statements - they'll simply see it as "football = trouble". We may know it is a minority (of fans), but that isn't how it will play with the majority (of people who live in the town)

it's unfortunate but true paul. it'll take a long time for football to get away from that image as long as these sporadic events keep occuring.

I think one of the things that made him feel this was a general problem with Rovers' fans was the abuse he got when being led into the ambulance (obviously injured) from "ordinary" Rovers fans in shirts etc (ie not your standard hoolie Stone island clobber). I think in the same shoes, I'd be a lot less sympathetic to the "ordinary Gasheads are OK" line of argument.

as soon as personal emotion becomes involved in a situation its always difficult to take a pragmatic and neutral stance, you can't distance yourself from the event.

I'm only saying to do positive joint fan stuff once (if) the ground share is inevitable.

Anyhoo. That sounds like the easy option to me Paul. No, you are never going to stop the minority of thugs causing as much trouble as they can. However you could do your best to alienate them. Have a fans XI friendly, or even a Rovers Legends vs. Swindon Legends Friendly. Maybe have players who have played for both teams field a team against a joint Rovers/Town trust team. A joint pub event with a hero who's played for both teams or something.

It's all a bit liberal wishy washy, but if it gets to the point where the ground share is clearly inevitable then there is no point keeping on with the negative protests which will only polarise the two sets of fans.

Chucking stuff is the only way to sort stuff out.

Maybe a Custard Pie fight.
