Sunderland are a massive club.

I'd say their certainly a Premiership club.

Their support is immense.

Their support is very fickle - like people at leeds have said -  a measure of size is retaining fans when you struggle - Sunderland didn't do that in thir last prem season IIRC.  Man city managed to get full houses in League One, clubs like Sheff Wed, Leeds etc seem to lose support when mediocrity strikes - when TBH is no surprise at all.

Out of interest the season 98/99 that Man City spent in Div 3, they averaged 28,000.....pretty impressive, but Sunderland were in Div 2 and averaged 38,000.....only bettered by ManUre and Liverpool from the Prem.

Intersting stuff Reg - although they were somehting like 20K below capacity this season according to this site:

http://www.soccerstats.com/2khcrowd.asp?league=England2&homeaway=3

I guess stats can be used to prove anything (ie the Newcastle myth) IMHo only really Man City can have great credit for their support retention a few years ago, that said Norwich and to a lesser extent Ipswich have held good crowds considerign teh extent of their mediocrity.

And average gate of 38,000 in The Championship is very impressive.

I know the gates have not always been that high but how many other teams would get 50,000+ for all home matches after winning nothing since 1969? Manchester United maybe

Open top bus would be taking the piss after some of the crap we've had this season!

This was a crap division which we wouldn't have been in in the first place if the finances hadn't been cocked up. Yes, we're out and I'm glad but to be honest the real aim is be a decent, top-end League 1 side again within the next 2 seasons

not in Prem during 05/06 season. Their ground was always half empty. I don't reckon that will happen next season.

I think we should do our own open-top bus parade, and all climb aboard one of these, decked out in STFC gear celebrating our promotion to remind those less fortunate than ourselves what happy fans of a FOOTBALL LEAGUE club look like:
