I had the choice between a Tory candidate who seems more interested in filling my village with speedbumps and traffic calming measures which are just shit or Green and Lib Dem candidates who I know fuck all about.

I was tempted to draw a cock on the voting slip but I voted Green instead.

I couldn't bring myself to vote for Gary "I'm a complete cunt who closes perfectly good schools" Perkins in Shaw & Nine Elms, so I didn't bother. I don't think much of the other candidates either, tbh.

Now if Johnny Doyle had stood for Labour this time around...

i voted green too.on a local level i think they would be good
exactly, i dont really see what a vote for labour/con/libdem would do at a local level, other than reassure the parties that they can carry on monopolising the system from central government. a vote for greens is more likely to result in useful positive changes in your local area on the issues that matter at a local level. more power should be given to local government, if they are ready for it, because many local issues must be addressed locally and not on a national level. the diversity of our country means that problems in one area are non-existent in others, and vice versa.

i'm glad to hear you did your research into their manifestos, rich. you are certainly an enlightened abstainer.

i couldn't find any info about my local candidates bar the tory bloke who sent us about three flyers and visited us the other weekend. he seemed alright and i did consider voting tory on the basis that he at least put the effort in to win the votes, but i couldn't bring myself to do it so thought a vote for the green party would be a vote that wasn't wasted.

John stood last May, Matt.

He didn't stand a chance against Keith Williams (Con). S&NE is probably the most Conservative ward in Swindon bar the Old Town ones.

It needed an independent conservative this time round, but I couldn't find anybody who wanted to stand. And no, not me - I just wouldn't have the patience or cool head to be a fucking councillor. It would drive me mad sitting through all those shite meetings and Full Council every month.

Point of information comrade.....Eastcott Ward which contains most of Old Town's housing, has returned Liberals for years, interspersed with some Labour ....back in the very early 80's Bawden, held it as his private fiefdom, due to a happy knack of getting the postal vote from the surprising amount of care homes, in the Ward.

It was a night of long and hard celebrating when he was sent packing, only to return in Lawn.

Lawn now seems to picked up the name Old Town and Lawn, which appears to be a bit of estate agent rebranding.

I usually make a point on voting but the locals this year don't mean much to me, so I haven't bothered.

no can't be bothered. we have been stuck under a Labour council for years except the last few and i dont think much has really changed here with the Tories in charge. the only thing they have managed to do is get town centre regeneration on track. on a local scale i dont really think it matters too much who you have in charge. it's either going to be Labour or Conservative who are not much different in my eyes so i didn't bother this time round. i dont believe in voting Green because there is more to politics than making sure we all meet our green targets. thats just my opinion anyway

Rich

With all due respect it is about leadership.

Fuck what the parties stand for (and this is the main problem with local elections...local politics do NOT equal national politics or leaders).

The man at the helm of SBC is just so, so much better - in fact a billion miles - better than the last council leader.

I really want him to succeed - he has more real world nous and reality checks than anybody has in Swindon since David Murray John.

Having said that, I couldn't bring myself to vote for one of his dead wood blinkered associates today. Not the leader's fault - he's got to play politics within his party as well.

Yes, I understand your Reginaldness.

Eastcott is a dichotomy and I agree thet OT&L is the real stronghold of the Tories.

Which is wot I woz aiming at.
