ood afternoon

It has been a busy week so far following what was the poorest performance I have seen since I arrived the club. Let me assure you the candles have been burning overnight trying to get the bottom of what went wrong and some strong words have been said since our defeat at Stockport.

All contract talks have now been suspended because I want to see a commitment and desire from the players to put the thoughts in my mind to commence contract talks with the players. There is only Phil Smith signed up for next season in the first team squad but at the moment there are others asking for more money. Those talks have now been frozen and it is now up to the players to change my mind on that.

The Town side pre-match

If anyone wants to play in my team this weekend then there performances in training will have to convince me that they are worthy of a place. The disappointing thing at the weekend for me, was the fact that we didn't compete. I don't believe at this moment in time that my squad has that killer instinct required. Our season began on Monday and I will be naming my team early this week which will give us time to work and focus on the challenge ahead this weekend.

Too many tackles and too many headers are not being won at the moment. Not enough players who want to take responsibility. The squad has not seen many changes since I arrived but I now believe that several of the players have reverted to the kind of attitude that was on display last season.

They said...

Paul Sturrock's warning to his squad

Ady Williams' leadership qualities have been key to our season and now we are paying the price without him. He is tremendously experienced and he has a massive influence on those around him. It is my job now to find someone who can come in and add that kind of experience to the squad.

I have been on the phone over the weekend and in the early part of the week enquiring about additions to the squad. The coaching staff have a dossier of players to work through and we are at games all the time. I am looking to bring a few in because there is room for movement.

Manager Paul Sturrock

There is no point in me beating about the bush and there have been too many times that I have beaten myself up over team selection at this football club. I have shielded the players from criticism but today I have taken a back seat and these players are going to be sent out there on Saturday and our loyal supporters can judge their performances.

Only your reaction will tell us whether the players on show are showing the passion, desire and commitment required.

hmm, what he actually says is:

Quote
"Peter continues his recovery and hopefully he will be back training with the first team before the end of the season, but we don't want to put him at any risk of a recurrence of the injury by forcing him into competitive action too early. He will be a Swindon player next season so there will be plenty more to come from him I'm sure," finished Sturrock.

So I don't think that means we've signed him, just the standard "We intend to exercise the option to sign him when it falls due".

Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock talks about midfielder Curtis Weston as well as confirming Peter Brezovan will be joining the ranks on a permanent basis.

Weston started the season in good form as Town stormed to the League Two summit but in recent weeks has been amongst the substitutes, with the manager offering his views on central midfield play.

"Curtis has an idea of how he believes football should be played and that is well away from how I want my midfielders to play. I see the central midfield area as a passing zone.

"I have spoken to him and there are three things I look for in a central midfielder and those are defensive qualities, passing ability and goalscoring.

"Curtis is a young player and he is now missing the experienced player alongside him with Paul Evans out injured. That is also true of Ady Williams who has had a tremendous impact on Jerel's performances this season."

There was also an update on the fitness of both midfielder Paul Evans and goalkeeper Peter Brezovan.

"Evo is still recovering from his injury and we don't want to race him back too soon. He will feature before the end of the campaign and that could be an important time for us."

"He will be a Swindon player next season"

If Starnes / Bowden etc had said that I'm not sure I would have believed it.

Coming from Sturrock though, sounds as if we have signed him, at the very least on loan for next season.  I cant think why else he would say it?

In all fairness when players joining comes from Sturrock it more often than not ends in disapointment!
But to be fair I think we do have Brez in the bag for next year.

It also says this, "Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock talks about midfielder Curtis Weston as well as confirming Peter Brezovan will be joining the ranks on a permanent basis."

Horrah.
