As part of my film coursework I am doing some research into auteurs.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines an auteur as: 'a film director who influences their films so much that they rank as their author'. Another definition - taken from Dictionary.com is: 'a filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp'.
Using these definitions, what directors/filmmakers would you consider to be auteurs and why?

I also agree with Stanley kubrick. An absoloute master at getting the best out of his actors and staff. His films had little quips in them to make you think and most of his films even the suspense ones had a piece to make you chuckle.. most people have a fav kubrick film but mine is dr strangelove.
You need to watch Kubricks films to understand what i am trying to write each one unique but all have the Kubrick feel.....

I've done a similar essay and would recommend, the Coen Brothers as a good choice - yes, there's two of them but they deal with alot of the production from writing, editing and direction.
And their films are great.

think, Fear and Loathing, 12 monkeys, Brazil, the fisher king etc. all of them absolutely visually stunning

Can't believe I didn't think of Gilliam, top shout. Tarantino's not an auteur, just a film-obsessed nutter. Ta for the suggestions. As it happens my 'question' is whether the Coen brothers are auteurs and if this is evident in their mainstram work  If nobody mentions Lynch I shall hang myself at dawn. |
