Spent about 6 weeks there.

Well worth going, all the sights are good.

Buy a lonely planet guide.

Not too expensive, when I was there it was £6 egyptian to £1 english. The hotel I stayed in was £20 egyptian for a twin room with hot water and air con (this was in Cairo)

When back packing around other places (Aswan, Luxor etc) you can get real budget places for about £10 Egyptian.

Cairo is a shit pit. Spend as little time as possible there. There are no bars apart from in the 5* hotels (though we did find a secret bar one night) but there are offies where you can buy vodka etc (don't get the local vodka, it will make you go blind).

Everywhere you go someone will try and rip you off. Everyone who stops you has a papyrus shop or perfurme shop (but they say "museum") and wherever you say you are from they will have a cousin there who is a doctor.

Depends what you want out of it macca. If you want luxury and relaxation, book an organised tour and you will get herded around on air con coaches with old fogies but see all the sights and stay in plush hotels.

If you want adventure and something different. Buy the lonely planet, book a flight and orgainse everything yourself when you get there!

Stay at the Bostan Hotel in Cairo (cheap, clean and friendly). Get yourself a local train to Luxor (about £3 for an overnight sleeper) and from there you can visit Aswan on a day trip. Then book yourself a cruise up the nile on a Felluca to Edfu (about 3 nights) and then arrange a local bus back to Cairo.

Then to relax get yourself up to the red sea. Bishibishi camp at Dahab is good, near the beach and cheap. A few good bars, watersports etc and it's 10 hours on a bus from Cairo and cheap as fook!

If you want to take your daughter/partner or whatever, you need to do the 5* thing really IMO.

There's no middle ground really....backpack and be prepared for hassle or go 5* and be told how to have your holiday apart from when  you're sitting round the pool Cheesy

Just got back from Egypt last Friday, had two weeks at the Grand Makadi, Makadi Bay near Hurghada.  Lovely place to visit, although as I was on an all inclusive holiday just ate loads and drank loads, didn't really see many of the sites.

Egyptian pound is now 11 to £1.  Also if you want to bring home fags and booze buy it from the airport.  200 Marlboro cost £4 (as they were charging in US dollars 2 to 1)..

Morrocco is meant to be good too.  I really want to do north Africa soon as my Grandad was in Egypt in the war and it'd be nice to see all the sites he saw and told me about.  Wherever you go lonely planet is the way forward, not too sure about taking kids as I thankfully have avoided them thus.

Morrocco is much like Egypt, and indeed many African countries. Great to visit, dirt cheap but expect loads of hassle as you are wealthy foreign white man!

A lot of people slate Turkey but I went last year for the first time and it's dirt cheap, family friendly and it was also pretty damn hot! Got a last minute deal for £126 per person which included flights, B&B in a 3* hotel and transfers. www.teletextholidays.co.uk  Cheesy

Slovenia is a great country to visit, you could go to Lake Bled area or try Postoroz/Piran.   Nice, cheap, hot in the summer, fantastic country!!!
