...noticed today a new shop opened selling just Polish foodstuffs....all the advertising etc is in Polish, which may put off any potential English customers. I'm always up for trying out new cuisine, but haven't ever thought of Polish foods as being much beyond sausages and gherkins.
There has been a small place, which doubled as a sweet shop, but sold some Polish stuff.....I used to buy a sausage called something like mifsliska there... ... for years, which catered for the post war emigree community.
This new place though is just hard core Polska.....any suggestions as to what interesting ethnic Polish food might be worth looking out for and the words for it?

Is that groundwell rd, I've heard good things about the old polish deli stuff from friends with polish ancestry, i'll find out whats meant to be good.

Is that groundwell rd, I've heard good things about the old polish deli stuff from friends with polish ancestry, i'll find out whats meant to be good. The old one is Groundwell Road.....new one on Vic Hill. |

i have heared about the new one also, not yet payed a visit tho, i cant see maryla (the owner of the one in grounwell rd) being too chuffed about it.
a few things worth a try:
Kabanos (dried polish sausage) and various other meats (wedliny)
Golabki (translated as pigeons but not worry its only cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat and whatever you want really)
Piergoi (a large ravioli, with fillings such as potato/cheese (po rusku), wild mushrooms(Pieczarki), cabbage(kapusta), meat(miesne)and even sweet one with blue berries(jagody))
flaki (tripe, ye nuff said, keep away, i cant believe i once likes it)
barszc (beetroot soup, doesnt sound appetising but i tell you its one of the best soups ever)
I'll add some more shortly.
Traditionsal polish bread is real nice too.

barszc is loverly tho.
oh and bigos (hunters stew, cabbage based cassarole type thing)
polish mustard is the bee's knees too.

polish mustard is the bee's knees too. I was raised on post war austerity foods....tripe, chitterlings, pig's trotters that sort of thing. All these things sound similar, make something from what you've got, which in the early 50's wasn't as lot. Presumably barszc is the same as borsch....which I believe to be Ukrainian. Poles and Ukranians don't get on too well? Is that right. |

barszc is the same as borsch althought i do believe the ukrainians make it slightly different to the poles, its anoter one of those arguament where did it really orignate from, same as wodka.
i dont really know much about the polish/ukrainian relationship reg although they are in bid to co-host euro 2012 so i cant see things being too bad between em.

Bigos - hhmmm...my dad make it the best  A diffrent kind of sausages - like for example 'biała' ("white") , but you must eat after boiled 15-20 minutes , kabanos is great as well Kaszanka - cereals with blood of pig czarnina - the soup made by duck blood rosół - another soup oscypek - smoked sheep cheese gzik - white cheese with salt , peper and onion....and for that hot potatoes... Enough ?  |
