my old man served with 2 para in aldershot then transfered to the catering corps just after he finished his tours in the falklands. Think cooking a soufflé, was more safe than strapping a rucksack on your back and throwing yourself out of a perfectly safe plane.

Bartek, and anyone else who might be interested ,the paras are an elite regiment within the british army, and pcoy is the parachute training course you do once youve done the grunt stuff!Basic infantry training)
Our government are considering  stopping the pcoy(where you learn how to jump out of working planes(i know, i had to be pushed) with a normal drop and flop chute, or learn to drop from hi altitude wearing a gimp mask and a bottle by your side bit) once youve done the basic para infantry training and suspending it until 2011. So even if you are qlfd. there are going to be limited jumps.
So in effect, you have a parachute regiment(or anyone involved with 16 air assault brigade) whether they are newbies or not, unable to continue the traditions of the regiment due to government cuts.

So we will have a para regiment that cannot train for deployment by air cos the government say they cannot afford it.

So if any one on here is interested in making a stand against this govmt trying to make an arse of a regiment of fine tradition, then please pm me and i'll point you in the direction of a site that allows you to voice an opinion.

My grandad trained para's during the Second World War.  In his later days it was his ambition to take a flight somewhere, because everytime he'd been in an airplane, he'd jumped out.  He was probably too frail by the time he seriously considered it, so unfortunately he never did get to land.

The last time a military force parachuted into a hostile situation was Kolweice (SP) in the 1970's. That was the 2nd REP, the French Foreign Legions parachute regiment.

No major military force has used this tactic since WW2.

As a tool for making units feel more elite I can see the benefit, but for tactical military purposes I think its use is outdated.

Just my opinion.....

So what about special forces herthab? Most of the guys (roughly 52%) originate from the paras, And lets face it, this govmt are happy to sing their praises when it suits them.Helmand recently? most went in by land, but the path finders dropped in.
(i exclude the rum swiggers from the rm in this)
How have we got guys into cz's covertly over the last few conflicts.?
Mainly halo or lalo but where are these guys going to learn the trade?

Oh yeah, while im on my high horse, did you all know RAF Lyneham shuts in 2012? Perhaps thats where the new stadium will be built!

Millom out.
