Technically, he'd have still been under contract if he hadn't been paid off

The management team we've got coming doesn't look to shabby either - Kevin Summerfield is experienced enough and Blackley has managed Hibs in the past (about 20 years back)

a really good appointment. who cares about the clause? he won't bugger off straight away. can't see Wednesday wanting him back in a hurry. they have just god rid of him for peaks sake! with this management team we will go up this season. or at least i hope. i wait for tomorrow with anticipation

This clause Sturrock is supposedly insisting on is a typically lazy piece of reporting by 'The People'. They have taken it from an 'off the cuff' comment Sturrock made on Radio Sheffield when he was quite emotional about being sacked and had just had fans phoning in saying how great he was. I suspect the reality is that if he takes over he will have a clause in his contract like Wise did with a set level of compensation for any club. If you want a successful manager you have to accept they will be ambitious to manage at a higher level (we are in Division 4 remember). If you just want somebody who is loyal then it means they are not capable of getting a better job and we will hang around in this league.
If Wednesday ever are taken over (highly unlikely any time soon) then the investors would need so much money that paying compensation for Sturrock would be a relatively small outlay anyway. A vocal minority of Wednesday fans have been trying to force Dave Allan out for years but have never got anywhere near as nobody can stump up the money to pay off the debts and run the club (sound familiar?). A lot of other fans don't like Allen but are so apathetic that it would probably take them being relegated for anything to happen. Furthermore they have done really well since Sturrock left which has eased the pressure on Allen.
On balance I am in favour of appointing Sturrock as his record in the bottom 2 divisions is excellent. The Wednesday fans I know have sometimes complained about the blandness of his football but there were no complaints about style when he was getting them promoted. His biggest problem at Hillsborough was home results but Wednesday have had that problem for years as away teams enjoy playing there and some of Wednesday's players seem a bit daunted. No reason to think he would have that problem with us (Plymouth were virtually unbeatable at home).
It's absolutely critical we go up this year as it is very easy to get stuck in this league if you don't go straight back up. Sturrock is probably the most likely candidate to achieve it.

Someone on the Adver board says todays Adver has reported that there is no clause and soe form of an 18-month bar on a big-club release clause - that'd be superb. Anyone able to confirm this?
