The problem with all this is that even after you've scrutinised candidate's previous records, as players and as coaches or managers you're still taking a risk in any appointment.

For example, Sturrock was a pretty good player & achieved International caps for Scotland.  As a manager he has obtained promotions at Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday & both clubs were better after he'd left than they were when he joined.  His credentials therefore are impressive and even his short tenure at Southampton doesn't detract from them. His appointment would appear to be the surest option for success but it's still a risk.

Haven't we all seen managers appointed previously at Swindon who, for various reasons have not cut the mustard.  Just think back to Jimmy Quinn, John Gorman or Steve McMahon. Nice guys (well, with the exception of McMahon maybe), knew their football but didn't bring what we all desire - success in the long term of our beloved Swindon Town.

Who the hell is 'Sturrage'.

How can anybody make a decision on Luc Nijholt when nobody knows anything about his credentials.

These people who think that by employing an ex-player as manager without bothering to wonder about his suitability for the job does my head in.

The only criteria should be "THE BEST MAN FOR THE JOB' - that may well be Nijholt but not just because he used to play for us.

To be honest I think it's Nijholt's credentials that have got people excited about his possible appointment, and they've been discussed at length already on here.  Views on his achievements/coaching badges/contacts/lower league knowledge are all subjective, but to suggest that people want him in simply because he's an ex-player is a bit blinkered mate.

I think Pook could do a good job as player manager, I think he is the underdog that every Town fan is afraid of rooting for publically. Pook could really bring a new dimension to the club and take us back to the premiership with his elite work ethic and positive attitude, take it y'all thinking the same as!?  Cool

I think Nijholt would be the best option because if successful he is more likely to hang around for several years and keep the good work up. If successful Sturrage would jump ship to a bigger club ASAP [ala Wise].
My only worry is, why is Nijholt interested now, when the job was available several months ago and his name was not in the 'pot' then? Is this because Wise was the only man considered at that time?

Completely disagree Sturrock has shown good loyalty throughout his career spending good amounts of time with Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday, the Southampton job he got stitched up on so I would say hes nothing like Wise, I reckon if he came here to do a job he would be here for at least 2 years.

perhaps if you bothered to read the number of posts i've made regarding nijholt, you'll realise that i, as well as many others, are fully aware of his managerial and coaching credentials.

the fact he's an ex-town player who i particularly liked is merely a bonus.

sturrock on the other hand is the better option in terms of what he's achieved but there's no doubt he'd be off for a better job as soon as it came along, whereas nijholt would need to build up his reputation here first.
