If you're gonna stick with your options go for Venice or Rome, not Paris though, would be the last choice for me.

If you're set on Italy but don't want to go mainstream try Siena in Tuscany, lovely little town.
Can't go wrong with Venice, but not the most original of choices.

I heard that Venice is a bit smelly. Have been to Paris and Florence is a nicer alternative to Rome or Venice.
Siena in Tuscany, lovely little town

Never had this problem when I went, in mid June one year.
Thought the place was nice, can get very very crowded at times though.
Paris is ok, it's just full of stuck up french twats though. Least you can chat to the italians about the footie.
