.......If Peacock had been 100% fit and we had Paul Evans for the 2nd half of last season we would have stayed up.

I know its a bit pointless because whats done is done, and theres no changing our relegation but with the battling qualities that those 2 provide we would have stayed up.

For all his faults Cureton would have thrived on having someone in the midfield capable of picking out his clever runs and having some physical presence up front alongside him that wasnt Trevor fucking Benjamin

i still think that if we had Paul Smith fit for last season we would have stayed up. we lacked quality last year though. everyone will admit that. even players like Peacock were sometimes never at their best. this year is different and we have more quality i think. as ive said before it's just a shame we have to put up with league 2 because i think this side can challenge in league 1 tbh

All I'm saying is its a different era.  If we had an at his peak Micky Hazard we would have stayed up.  Or Duncan Shearer, or Don Bloody Rogers.  Whats done is done.  Evans may not have fancied us last year.

That is all true.

However its a lot more logical to look at players that play for us now, rather than be a knob and start reeling off names of good players from the past who could have "saved" us.

I know its a different era, and I'm not all that fussed we went down in the end, because I dont think Wise and Poyet would be here otherwise.

However, the fact reamins that if you put 2 battling, deterimed players who both also have quality into last seasons team we would have stayed up.

Evans played for Rotherham v STFC at Millmoor last season....we won 1-0, with from memory a fairly bizarre team.

Ok, I agree with you on that.  Its a shame, but then I also agree that Wise and Poyet wouldn't be here, so its all worked out, personally anyway.  I love the new regime and the professional air the club has now.

Yes, I think we would have stayed up.  I also think this current team would be at least mid table in league 1 (no way of proving it of course)

I don't think it's a pointless thing to discuss as this is a forum and forums are for discussing things.

You could say that everything is pointless. That life is pointless, that we're all going to die so what't the point in anything, least of all discussing it?

But yes, given those factors, we would have stayed up - FACT!

I'm not convinced that this side would be mid-table in league one... I think a lot of good will come out of the fact that we've come down and are subsequently expected to win games each week - that in itself breeds confidence. Weston would have struggled in league one in his first full season - while the confidence from winning this year will give us a new impetus next year, if we go up. F*** it - you gotta go backwards to go forward sometimes innit.

Last year I thought we had a side capable of staying up comfortably. Peacock roberts, cureton and thorpe should have caused untold problems, the difficulty was a) pre-season was a shambles and b) we had no midfield. AS fit Paul Smith would have kept us up - maybe an Evans - at the end of the day we never recovered from that abysmal start. if we go up this year no one will even remember what happened last year in my opinion - and we would have learned a few valuable lessons along the way.

Put it this way - if we hadn't of gone down iffy would still be manager and we'd have no wise.

Just a sweeping statement, but if we hadn't gone down we wouldn't have got Wise and Gus in, we wouldn't have got Adi Williams, weston, Holgate would still be striker, Chris McPhee would be no9, Big Trev wouldn't be far behind, we wouldn't have Petr the Great, we'd have 2 thousand less on the gate -

One small step back, hopefully to start a new beginning and a few steps forward.

saying all that, I fkin love Iffy Onuora (not like that) and the man deserves a lucky break.

Agreed, and let's face it if we do go up this team will only get stronger because we'll have more fans coming in and more money to spend etc etc. This team with a great year under their belts could be a good side in League One... Not sure if Evans would be so dominant but weston would have a full year under him - our defence another year together - brezovan could have been signed permanently.

This season could be the best thing to happen to this club in a long while - even if we were to finish in play-offs and not go up - the excitement generated already, the increase in attendances and the players we're attracting is a million miles away from what happened last season - it's bonkers. But I love it.

I think going down has brought much needed changes to this club, and I have said from the start of this season that the current squad is better than last year's.

I'm not sure how well they could do in League 1 but they would almost certainly not have gone down!
