Author Topic: Premiership to Axe 'Injury Breaks'...  (Read 2652 times)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Premier League has asked players, managers and referees to end the custom of the ball being kicked out of play when a player goes down injured.

Decisions on whether a break in play is necessary for treatment to be received will now be taken by the referee
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something had to be done, it was getting abused. Not sure how it'll work though, cos players will still try to influence the referee.

Yes. Unfortunately it's a sporting gesture that should be done, but is frequently abused, both by players pretending to be injured and by teams playing on when there is a legitimate problem.

I dont really see how its going to help. The ref is just going to blow the whistle anyway if someone goes down, so will ultimatley have the same effect.

Not if he thinks they're faking.

But he can choose to ignore someone if he thinks it's non-critical and wait for a break in play.
E.g. Ronaldo goes down up front for United in a typical fake injury situation. Since he's not a defender, the other team can play on attacking and the referee can ignore it until the next break in play.

Obviously things like Goalie injuries or injuries that are in the way will be dealt with immediately.

I think its a great idea, and hope the advice is passed on through the lower leagues and world game if it's successful.

Won't this just encourage even more exaggeration of 'injuries'?

But how is the ref going to make a sound judgement on if someone is faking or not from 40 yards away?

There will be just as many arguements if not more caused by this if the ref ignores a seriously injured player.

I understand what they are trying to do, but this will not work. :old:

What they should do is allow the rugby rules.

A Physio may enter the field of play at anytime to treat a player, as long as he/she doesn't interfere with the game - and even then, if they are in the way, the referee will stop the game.

It would remove the need for play to be stopped every time - it'd still need to be stopped sometimes, but not always.

Rugby is more terriotorial than football though. Can't see it working.

most players can get up and leave the pitch anyway.
they just want the game stopped so they get all the attention.

That's very true, but if the ref is influenced to stop games it's going to make this problem worse if teams want to waste time or get a slight knock which they can recover from but don't want to give their team a man down.

Expect to see Robben rolling over 50 times extra

I personally think that if a player goes down injured they should go off for a minimum of 5 minutes for treatment. Would soon stop the cunts rolling around like they had been shot. If not then Im sure there manager would shoot them!
