luckily its not the general public who will be hiring though. when a graduate is interviewed for a graduate position, the person interviewing them (if its a decent firm) will have a decent general knowledge of the university system and will have probably been through it themselves.
bascially you could work your arse off and get a 1st from a uni ranked outside the top 25 and be rejected, but a 2:2 from a well regarded one and they'll let you in. agreed that outside the top 8 or so uni's its much of a muchness, but the lower your uni down the tables past 25th-ish (where they start to go a bit shit) the less your degree is worth to someone who knows their stuff.
i've learnt recently though that the best way to get the job you want is to have contacts. someone with a 1st from oxford might get rejected from the 'big 5', but if you've got a 2:2 and have some contacts to get you a placement you're in there. the competition for 'work experience' at the big 5 is harder than getting an actual job.
and if everyone was thinking logically of course they'd employ the person who interviews best and would fit the role best, unfortunately there's alot of bullshit when it comes to recruitment and for the most competitive grad jobs going they have to split hairs and consider things like where you went to uni and how well regarded that uni is.
universities don't sell themselves on reputations (they do it on teaching, sports facilities, etc.) because they don't need to do that - employers do it for them with the selection measures mentioned. You're relying on personel / HR departments knowing what they are doing there OF. Oh dear! ![Doh](//thetownend.com/Smileys/tefsmile/doh.gif) Again, just my experiences but HR departments are the biggest joke around and dont know their arse from their elbow. You are probablly right though, I'm sure for specifc graduate jobs they have a greater knowledge of the uni system etc. The trouble being that theres about 1,000 graduates for evey graduate job I'm going to shut up about this now, I'm not even sure what my point is anymore :?

Just to add my 2 cents worth to the debate, I didn't go to uni and have the potential to earn shit loads more than any graduate by taking qualifications specific to my industry.
All it will cost is £100 per exam, for 8 exams = £800. A damn lot cheaper than going to uni and then you're easily set for at least £35k a year.

[pedantic]Anyway it's big 4 not 5[/pedantic] + grant thornton E & Y at number 4 makes over triple that. BDO and Baker Tilly are closer to Grant Thornton than GT to the big 4, so I don't really think it's a big 5 scenario.

There are plenty of plumbers for example that earn double that in a year. Uni certainly isn't the best option for a lot of things but that's a whole new debate.

For example my brother last September started a graduate scheme at Jp Morgan which pays him just under £28,000 a year (a lot lower after tax though ![Oops](//thetownend.com/Smileys/tefsmile/oops.gif) ). However a few years down the line, he can be expecting around £50-60k (as long as he does well) Its like qualified accountants too. Once you have qualified (usually takes 3 years) you can expect to be paid between £35-40k, and the only way is up in terms of pay. I've got a mate who works in Vegas auditing casinos., and he gets around £1000 a day. Being a graduate is defo the way to go if you end up working in abig company which has good promotion prospects. However otherwise it can be an expensive time

Well I got my AS results today!
Economics and Business A (coursework should bring it down to a B I think) Geography B History B Maths C Critical thinking C
I know it sounds really stupid and nerdy as they are quite good results, but I will have to retake all of my Maths exams and a couple of others to get the grades I want.
History will be dropped as the exams are far too much work, even if I did get a B!

Financial Services, as a Financial Adviser. £35k is a real basic salary, but the potential's there to earn a LOT more and very quickly. Also you get paid lots of commission.
