Boland earns Swindon trial

July 4, 2006

Coca-Cola League One side Swindon Town have offered a trial to former Republic of Ireland under-21 international Willie Boland, who is on the look-out for a new club since parting company with Cardiff City.

Boland spent seven seasons at Ninian Park but was informed before the end of last season that he would not be kept on in south Wales.

He made 15 Coca-Cola Championship appearances for the Bluebirds last term, including 11 starts.

And Swindon manager Dennis Wise hopes that the 30-year-old Irishman can join him in bringing some much-needed graft to the Robins midfield next season.

Probably already here?

Midfielder Boland close to moving from Bluebirds to the RobinsJul 4 2006

Swindon Town are close to agreeing terms with former Cardiff City midfield player Willie Boland.

The Irishman, pictured right, was Cardiff City's longest serving player, having been at the club for seven years, and the last senior link with the pre-Sam Hammam days when he was released by manager Dave Jones.

Boland, 30, was out of contract at the end of June and among a number of players told he could go.

Dennis Wise is the new manager at Swindon and he is keen on Boland's battling qualities.

Yeovil Town are also interested in signing Boland, but it seems Swindon will win the race.

Seems a strong denial especially given all of the press coverage to the contrary including Sky Sports the other week.

Bit of a shame as he was definately a player with a pedigree and experience without being to far on the wrong side of 30 or a bit injury prone of late.
