He stamped his foot back, and the look on his face on the replay (only seen it the once so stand to be corrected) said it all for me - pure malice. Rooney stamped down, maybe mainly to free himself from the entanglement, and probably not deliberately aimed at the guy's nads, but he meant to stamp, he did it deliberately and to hurt (otherwise, it wouldn't have got him free from the entanglement) and that's a straight red.

I know that, but it doesn't stop his action to try and get away from them being a deliberate stamp and so a red. I don't buy this "just where his foot landed". But if it's true that he was sent off for the push, it's immaterial anyway.
