An imminent change in finances means I'm able to replace my car at long last. I've got a budget of around £5k but there is a little room for flexibility, depending on insurance costs etc. Second hand only obviously and hatchbacks preferable.
I've been looking (over and over and over) at a Golf GT TDi, seen an X reg for just under £5k in good condition, not being an expert it sounds like a good deal but not 100% sure. Parkers guide says it's worth more though...
Any other recommendations? I'd like something solid but nippy, I've been driving this Clio for 2 years and I can chuck it around the roads with no problems so don't fancy driving a piece of plastic which'll fly away in the wind.
Insurance is a bit of a stumbling block as well, but I've got 2 years NCB and can get further discounts with Direct Line due to my parents car being insured with them.
Anyway, recommendations, thoughts and so on and so forth please.
p.s. this means I will drive to away games next season so lifts will be available

i have a fine 1987 mazda 323 4WD turbo you can have for £4995...  hmmmmmmmm, theres loads of cars you could have. honda civic, ford focus, vw golf, skoda fabia, seat ibiza/leon to name a few... all fair enough, probably wanna aim for 1.6 or 1.8 versions of these or they'll be pretty gutless. |

For £6k and a half you can have my car with personalised plate. Low insurance, full pug service history. Low mileage for year (only 30k)...

Golf TDi would be a good choice. They hold their value well, the diesel VW motor is one of the best around and expect to get 50mpg or thereabouts. Solid car, albeit a tad heavy which drops the performance a little. Expect maintenance costs to be on the heavy side though, so get it checked out thoroughly by a mechanic. Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia use the same chassis and engines, although you'll pay a premium for the german name and supposed build quality. I'd personally go for the Leon for best VFM, despite the fact it looks like a Mk 3 Astra to me.
Don't bother with flimsy froggie cars.
I just found a 2003 Mazda 6 and an older Lexus IS200 for under 5k on Auto Trader. Can't go wrong with Jap crap for reliability and loaded with equipment.
