I don't think they ever have counted in the Play offs. No they haven't. If they did we would have not been promoted in 87. They've moved from the replay idea to penalties though.

That was the basis of my thoughts. Didn't the Gills get the hump about it not being used??

I thought they did count once.
I know they didn't count in the final in 87 (thank god) but I'm sure against Tranmere in 93; when Maskell scored to make it 2-2 in the 2nd leg and 5-3 on aggregate (and save my heart from giving out) that Tranmere then needed 3 goals to go through as we'd go through on away goals.
So even when Hoddle gave the penalty away and it was back to 5-4 on aggregate; they still needed 1 more to level and take it into extra time. But if it'd have stayed level we'd have gone through on away goals.
I'm pretty sure that's correct on what I remember from the time, what I've read; and footage I have on it. But I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.
And having just looked around the internet a bit re this, Blackburn reached the 88-89 final against Palace on away goals beating Watford, so they did exist at some point.

Just to bore everyone to death on this, away goals did count in the semi-finals in 86-87, as Gillingham beat Sunderland 3-2 at home in the first leg, lost 4-3 in the 2nd leg and went through on away goals.
Very strange to have them count in the semi's and not in the final. No wonder Gillingham weren't happy. But they were the rules so who cares.
