Quote
Cureton is in no rush to escape
5th May 2006

JAMIE Cureton may not be happy at the prospect of League Two football but you won’t find him slapping in a transfer request and running for the exit, writes JON RITSON.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1940000/images/_1941291_jmreading300.jpg

The striker is looking to end a disappointing season on a positive note tomorrow before thoughts turn to the 2006/07 campaign.

Relegation inevitably fuels speculation among supporters about which players will stay or go, regardless of the individual’s contract circumstances.

Cureton has been the focus for much of that chatter.

The man himself says he will be turning out at Rochdale and Accrington Stanley next season, unless told otherwise!

However, first thing’s first. There is the small matter of securing three points against Peter Jackson’s Terriers.

Cureton, looking for his eighth goal in Town colours, said: “We want to finish as well as we can and the last memory you want people to go away with, including the players, is a victory.

“The supporters haven’t had a lot to shout about and although a win would by no means make up for what’s happened this season, it would be a late plus.”

Cureton, who still has a year to run on his existing deal, seems anxious to stress that no professional footballer should be happy at the prospect of performing in the basement, yet that isn’t the same as ignoring the challenge.

He said: “Next year is a different division but the goals are the same, namely scoring points and winning matches.

“You can talk about what you want and don’t want but you have to get on with it.

“The manager has said he’s going to talk to us all individually on Monday to talk about the future.

“I’m under contract. I’m not going to start banging things around and saying ‘I want to get out’.

“What will happen will happen and as it stands I’ll be back here in the summer. If someone comes in for you or the club says you can go, you then react to that.

“As I said though, I won’t be banging on the manager’s door.

“We’ll have a chat and see what the thoughts are.

“Your future is out of your hands unless you start putting in transfer requests and I won’t be doing that.”

I'd say he's on fairly decent wages at this level and unless he takes a cut I can't see anyone coming in for him.  Certainly not for a fee, perhaps if we  let him go on a free Colchester or someone similar may sneak in for him.

Sounds very much to me that he's facing up to staying and playing league two football.

Only other indication is Iffy mentions in todays Adver that there may be players under contract who may not be suited to League two football and he'll be looking at their position on Monday.

That speaks volumes and I 100% believe that Cureton falls into that category

agree with ol' fred here, i think iffy's made it clear - albeit subtlely - that cureton has no future here. he's been constantly dropped from the starting eleven for away games and i would be surprised to see him start on saturday.

If you read the quotes from the likes of Jenks, Whalley and Paul Smith and then compare them with what's been accredited to Cureton they are poles apart.

We need a certain type of player with a certain spirit and mentality for next season and I am afraid that the little guy does not have it.

What also speaks volumes is that among all this tub thumping from the players, our player of the season is ominously quiet.

But then I thinks we were all expecting that wern't we !

I want him to stay, but if the club get offered money for him they'll accept.

IMHO if an offer comes in from a higher league club he'll be off for a nominal fee.

Would like to keep him, only if he wants to stay though......which sounds unlikely

I expect the main consideration from the clubs point of view is his wages. I expect he is on a fair amount and due to him not settling the world alight id be inclined to get rid and bring in 2 maybe 3 players in on his wage

I think the money we save on wages outweighs the dubious advantage of keeping him

He won't stay fact, i think he'll go back to Bristol Rovers as it's a club he is still loyal to and if Junior decides to go then i think the move will be inevitable.

I think the critisism he's got lately is rather unfair and people need to open their eyes and look back at what he's done. He's scored some crucial goals going into the last stages of this season and we should not be slating him but be thankful we had him, who else would of got those goals ? He came back from colchester and we all seen a different player. He had worked incredibly hard and kept the faith when we needed it.

I don't know whether he will stay or not, I'd like him to but we'll have to see.
