I never said that you should drive by the Highway code if you read my second post and anyone who did is extemely naive and probably dangerous.
However, having driven now for the best part of 20 years and for the majority of that time driving 1,000 miles a week and still being alive, I think I might happen to know a little bit about driving.
What I said was one of the ways (not the only way) to judge the speed of an approaching car is what the speed limit is on that road.

If it's a 30mph limit and you see a car 500 metres away it would be fairly reasonable to assume you'd have enough time to cross the road, however if it's travelling at 70mph the car would be on you a lot faster than you might of thought.

I'm not condoning what happened I'm just saying that you can't always blame the person who pulls out of the junction.
