The revealing bit of why Di Canio did a U turn on signing Wojtanowicz comes at around 30 seconds into that subject in his interview. He mentions - roughly translated - that Wojtanowicz asked his captain Risser 'is that how you train all the time?' while at the same time mimicking Wojtanowicz blowing out of his arse during a training session.

Harsh on the player, maybe. It sends out another clear and loud message though that PDC demands ultimate comittment from his players and will fuck-off anyone who isn't up to scratch.
