My take (and it could be wild) is that it's the same reason that the roads are so shit. Cars have got heavier and more complicated and there are a lot more of them, but the services that are available haven't increased to the same level.
Sorry that's a bit rambly and maybe doesn't make sense, but here we are.
They have got heavier on average but that's only due to cars being bigger {than previously, in the UK and Europe}, so a lot of the components generally are heavier like brakes, tyres etc. Especially with so many {unnecessarily so} ''Wanker Panzers'' on the road now. But may I present to you the Citroén Oli? It's like the Ami on steroids - or essentially like a modern EV car just much lighter at only a thousand kg. I like the fact that it only tops out at 70mph too
https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/6379/new-citroen-oli-concept-price-specs-release-date#grefOk, so it's a concept car but I'm certain many of the features will be implemented into future cars. Which could see the average weight of cars drop.
Rambling? Welcome to my world you great big melon. Also, are we calling you ''Bobby Two Jags'' now as well?
