Title: Swindon Town vs Cambridge United Matchday Thread
Post by: Nemo on Friday, August 8, 2025, 10:53:53
Fingers crossed the game is on

So, with all the talk of safety inspections and closed bits of the ground, we've rather ignored the probably reasonable chance of there being a football match of Saturday.

Team news is that Harry Smith is doubtful (so he'll start), Kirkman is out, Munroe has tonsilitis. Ameen left wing back? Bodin?

We are 'struggling for subs' so could be one or two more.

Feels like we need a win for morale here, doesn't it?

A home loss in combination with the recent off field issues would certainly put an end to all the pre season optimism.

It does have the feeling of a must not lose already.

Scandalous that the club have left it this late to comply unless of course they enjoy the media coverage :D

Can't say that I've ever harboured anything other than indifference towards Cambridge Utd and its fans.

Having said that, the football shit list is always open for new & deserving entries.

Holloway presser quotes:

“Joel McGregor got a whole game into him, all apart from the last 10 minutes. So that was really good. 2-2 draw with Forest Green, which was a great exercise.”

“Harry is doubtful. Joel and Billy are sort of available, they will be in the squad.”

All of a sudden im not feeling too confident about this season :D funny how quickly things can change. Walsall was a bit of a slap in the face with our lack of experienced defenders. Still for the life of me, I  cant understand not playing Ryan Delaney. If we're paying him, play him. Three players in the back line making their EFL debuts was absolutely disrespectful to the league.

Im going for Swindon 2-1 Cambridge but that's me wanting to be optimistic and hoping that Walsall was just a blip :D I want to see Bodin feature, hopefully along with McGregor, and Ball starting instead on TWB

The nature of the Walsall defeat will do that.

Hate to say the obvious, but got to give it time to see which way the wind blows.

Wanted Westley. Only found out he was available late. Thought they could get him

Now looking for a Tshimanga replacement. In for someone that several are in for. Will know more Monday. Later comments suggested that this will be a loan.

Kirkman has a hamstring injury and is out.

Finlay Munroe has tonsilitis

Minturn only interest from teams he wouldnt want to go to. Needs games so he can stop making mistakes

Struggling for subs for Saturday

I don't see how he can be struggling for subs when he had Delaney and Butterworth sat at home last week.

Also, Bodin is fit enough to play some part.

Struggling for subs.... really??? Fuck me... I'm having a hard time believing that...

If we’ve got a squad of 23, including Delaney, Minturn & Butterworth, and they’re not going to be involved it only takes a couple of players out for us to be struggling to fill the bench.

Surely it makes more sense to involve those players, rather than not have a full bench.
Unless of course it impacts them getting a move away, or it costs us bonus payments

Title: Re: Swindon Town vs Cambridge United Matchday Thread
Post by: Nemo on Friday, August 8, 2025, 19:33:00
25 players at the club before touching the youths (Foye at least) and that's not including the five players out on loan who could all be recalled if we really were unable to fill the bench - I'd suggest that Holloway is being dramatic.

https://thetownend.com/index.php?topic=59328.msg1689579#msg1689579

Even if Smith, Munroe, McGregor and Kirkman are unavailable that's still 27 footballers who could reasonably be in the 18 man squad.

Holloway's "small squad" just involves pretending fringe players don't exist as far as I can see.

Available:

Ripley      Ward

Wright  Delaney   Mabete  TWB   McGregor (Fully fit?)

Kilkenny  Oldaker   Ball  Clarke  Snowden

Glatzel  Butterworth  Bodin (Fully fit?)  Smith (Doubtful)  Drinan  Nicholls  Ameen  Tabor

Assuming no Smith, that makes choice of 19 for matchday squad, expect Butterworth or Mabete to miss out.

As I posted a few days ago its absolutely bizarre.
To save you lovely Swindon (Swindle how fucking original) fans from reading the pages of utter hatred they have towards us, which shocked me as I thought they were pretty sound minded fans, blatantly not!

It seems that every season some random set of opposition fans take a dislike to us, happened with Wigan and Shrewsbury a few years back IIRC.

Ah well they must see us as a threat or they wouldnt be so pathetic.

I doubt that I am alone in thinking that this will end in defeat today .  I am sure that here will be  renewed calls to get it  forward  and a few boos at half time .

I can see this finishing up as 2-1 defeat. Glatzel to score from the bench.

Unfortunately I agree, I dont see where the goals will come from.

I have a feeling if Smith is out that Drinan will start as lone target man and Glatzel will start the game on the wing.

The only other change I am expecting is Munroe being injured at LB so surely Delaney must play at CB with Wilson-Brown moving to LB unless Holloway thinks Fil is ready to come in at CB.

                        Ripley
            Wright   Clarke   Mabete/Delaney

I think if we did a poll of the 92 they'd be very midtable. I'm not a big one for hating other clubs but even in this division Rovers, Gillingham, MK, Salford all attract more of our ire easily, and then probably Cheltenham and Crawley. They're just not a club to have strong feelings about, short of a two year period thirty years ago where John Beck made them a meme club. I could see a few years of Neil Harris giving them a bit more of unpleasant identity though.

Have a pretty grim feeling about the game today, but hope to be wrong.

Don't get why Nichols seems to be nailed on to start (admittedly 2 games out of 2, so may be jumping the gun),  Snowdon playing out of position to fill in and RWB still isn't particularly encouraging and leaves a bit of conern about depth their while McGregor is still building up fitness

Great to see that Smudger is starting, making a possible transfer to the Abbey Stadium less likely.  Also, could be Butters chance to show that his impact off the bench is indispensable.

I would like to think that it was absolute gamesmanship by Holloway on this Smith fitness thing.

Cambridge bouyed yesterday by the news that Smith isnt fit so they change their formation to suit and all of a sudden Smith plays and interupts their formation, as he did with playing Smith at CB vs Wimbledon last season.

Kaikai used to be a bit of a handful at times when he was at Blackpool his career seems to be starting high and getting lower every season. Very quick though and likes to take on fullbacks.

He caused us problems in the past so Snowdon will have to be on his toes today.

I hope Smith can get something out of the veteran CB 37 year old Michael Morrison today who even when younger wasnt known for his pace.

I have absolutely no idea what to make of that.  It was as unstructured a game as you could hope to watch with both teams seemingly throwing eleven men on a pitch and asking them to play wherever they fancy I guess.  Weird, win, who cares really.

After the most stable summer we've had in years, I was genuinely hoping - and maybe expecting - a strong start and a bit of continuity.  Early days, I know.  And 3 points from 6 is not a disaster.  But it feels chaotic.

Pleased we got points on the board.  Just not sure how we managed it.

Got it done. I’m sure they will feel an awful lot better with that under their belt.

Only two games in, but haven’t clicked at all yet. Hot potato at times in possession, sloppy generally with it, even with time. Not things we saw so much in the latter half of last season. Did hunk the wide men looked a lot better today, I was worried after last week.

Don’t think it would take much improvement to be at the right end of the league, we know the standard down here by now!

Maybe it is the formation. I thought we had too many that looked like they were trying to work out their role, rather than knowing it. Lots of moments with players out of position, and passes behind the man, not in front etc.

Munroe:
- New it was going to be tough
- Third goal was the most important
- When it was 3-2, it was just about holding the lead
- Second half got physical. Very physical
- Happy with the 3 points. Need to focus on next game
- L2 adjustment?: Its not all nice. Wants to get forward and cross, but sometimes has to not go forward.
- Experience of playing in Spain: Thought it would be a lot of passing. But it was very different. Very physical and better standard than expected.
- Ambition for the season: Known for a lot of fans. Great manager. Good L2 team pushing for L1. Found Holloway one of a kind. Fell in love with him in the first phone call. That persuaded him to join.

Holloway:
- Well done to the lads. They dug in
- Didnt like the performance. Didnt like the day.
- Expected us to get another goal. Their manager changed it and I didnt like us again
- We panicked. Just like the bad days of last year
- Expect the players to talk. Didnt want to have the bench shout all the time
- Wasnt kidding about Smith. Didnt think he would play
- Tried protecting the bench
- When we scored the 3rd, the players thought they had won
- Referee gave us help. Their management were irate that he didnt play on when their player was through
- All that matters is we have 3 points in the bag
- My team needs to know what every player should be doing and help eachother. They aren't doing it. Holloway has just gone ballistic at them over that
- Before throw ins the senior player need to tell the young ones where to go.
- Want to work on the fact that we wont have to dig in.
- We had lots of big players back hanging on. We knew what to do to hang on against a manager whose team never give up
- If the players did what we told them, we would never have been 1-0 down
- Players need to tell eachother where to go when there is a throw in.
- We didnt wobble. We always looked like we were going to score
- Distribution from the back was better this week
- Shocked at my team. If I was out there, I wouldnt have let the young uns make those mistakes
- They've worked with me long enough now. They should know by now!
- Got through training yesterday and Smith felt he could play. Glad he did. Good header for goal. He didn't train all week. Came in on friday, plays on Saturday and scores!
- Didnt want to see them straight after the game. Waited for the team to shower and change. Got the staff out of there and then gave the players a roasting! (Holloway was really irate)
- They need to stand up and take responsibility out there.
- Lack of communication. Took Munroe off when Drinan needed to go off
- Told Ameen to just stand up front and let the others defend
- Didnt enjoy it. Enjoyed last week more. The game is crazy. Glad we are going to score goals. But dont want team limping off hanging onto something. I want them to score more.
- Well done to them. Their manager made it hard for us
- McGregor could have been part of it. But thinks he needs some minutes to make it safer for him. He is completely flat out and doesnt do anything by halfs. So thought he'd protect him today
- There will be another player here on Monday. That was the last one they will add to the squad. Holloway cant pronounce his last name. Lots of letters that shouldn't be next to eachother. A good scrabble score. Letters in surname include 'MH'.

Let’s hope Holloway is bluffing when he said the striker is our last signing. We had two unused strikers today in Tabor and Bodin. Great tools to have in the box, but we’re missing elsewhere.

It’s been said before, but picking up Odimayo on a free would be good business. Covers the right side and centre back, with a bit of pace and now some experience.

For the sake of positivity, great to see Drinan get off the mark early. He’s a confidence player and has a lot to contribute. Good for Oldaker to be chipping in too. Only two players in the EFL scored 20 goals last year. Let’s spread the goals around the team.

What sort of state was the ground in? I thought the pitch surrounds looked smart on camera - something over the old gravel? Is the new screen fixed into that position, or is it being stored there?

Son was home from London to watch the first CG game based on my good feelings about this season and the general views around IH’s management of the team since taking over. Sat alongside him was a friend who was on the Town’s books as a youngster and later played for Bristol City youths. Their take on the game was both of them perplexed by the sheer lack of cohesion, team setup, players not appearing to quite know where or what they were supposed to be doing and generally muddling through the game.

I have to agree, pre-season I was fairly confident that we were on an upward path but recently not so sure, the Walsall game and to a large extent yesterday’s showed a worrying undercurrent of disjointed structure to the team, strange formations and substitutions. I know it is very early days and I desperately want to be entertained by team pushing for promotion out of this backwater of a division.
